The Roads Less Traveled
6/21/23 - Series 6, Day 5 - Back to US-2 and Westward Ho!

We’ve reached Sault Ste. Marie, which means our Canadian Portage has come to an end. While we will miss our neighbor to the north, we should fear not, for we are just getting started on the western segment of US-2! Tonight we cross the path of our old friend Highway 41 as we re-encounter the UP of Michigan and all the iron mining and shipping history of the area. Along the way, we will see more Cold War relics, fly under one of the longest bridges in the world, and visit historic Mackinac Island.

The adventure starts at 7p/10e/02z. You are welcome to fly along, chat, or lurk, whatever you prefer. Let’s go!

The Roads Less Traveled series is a trip down America’s back roads - the US Highways, border to border, coast to coast. Each of these group flights includes virtual tourism and a narrated history of the area through which we fly. In order to get the ”cruisin’ down the highway” perspective, we fly low and follow the roads. We will use real-world weather until we can’t maintain VFR; ATC procedures and airspace are mostly ignored so we can focus on adventure, discovery, and fun, while still doing pilot stuff!

Stream begins: 7p PT/10p ET (0200z)
Start Location: Sault Ste Marie Water Aerodrome (CPX8) for floatplanes. CYAM for land-lubbers
Aircraft: DHC-2 Beaver (amphibious version)
Live Weather chances: 99%

So cool. Doing this exact same tour going the other direction in the Top Rudder 103. Decided to skip the Canadian section after reaching Mackinac and instead pick up US 41 south and am almost to Miami now. Will swing north again on US 1 back up to Maine and finish out US 2 in the opposite direction.

Yeah! We did US-1 as our very first series. 41 was our last (series 5) before this one.
