The Roads Less Traveled
7/12/23 - Series 6, Day 7
Forest, Lakes, and Plains, Oh My!

Tonight’s flight begins at Lily Lake on the north end of Itasca County Airport in Grand Rapids, MN. We will take our floatplanes through the forests of Northern Minnesota as more and more of the famed 10,000 lakes appear, then just as quickly disappear as we enter the vastness of the Great Plains. Along the way, we will see where Minnesota iron comes from, talk about a man and his ox, visit the headwaters of the Mississippi River, discover more Cold War archaeology, and talk about high-tech UAVs.

The adventure starts at 7p/10e/02z. Everyone is welcome to fly along, chat, or lurk, whatever you prefer. Let’s go!

The Roads Less Traveled series is a trip down America’s back roads - the US Highways, border to border, coast to coast. Each of these group flights includes virtual tourism and a narrated history of the area through which we fly. In order to get the ”cruisin’ down the highway” perspective, we fly low and follow the roads. We will use real-world weather until we can’t maintain VFR; ATC procedures and airspace are mostly ignored so we can focus on adventure, discovery, and fun, while still doing pilot stuff!
