New to sim playing, looking for a good quality joystick and-throttle for my PC setup. Will the following be any good, budget around £300-400
Looking to fly single engine and A320 style aircraft. Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog - Hotas A10 Replica -Joystick and Throttle for Windows (PC)
Thanks in advance
Barry

I’ve been using the Warthog stick and throttle controllers for at least eight years, almost daily as in this is my retirement hobby. They are solid well built and heavy pieces of hardware with precise axis action with no hysteresis thanks to the hall effect transducers. I am also a retired pilot with decades of experience and it has never bothered me than I use a yoke IRL and a stick at the PC. I’ve seen pictures of popular yoke controllers and they look like toys, the Warthog controllers are not toys.
Thanks for this, I presume easy to set up also, love real flight sims and just had a go at the 320 which is weird with a joy stick compared to the 747. Now I’m hooked and built a strong PC to run the MSFS so looking forward to purchasing a good strong joystick and throttle. Cheers
The Warthog Hotas is a fair package if you are picking it up at recommended retail price. (Your budget)
Any more than that and it starts to be less good as you start to move into the price range of the tier above (which can be bought direct from manufacturer and their prices didn’t rise)
Possibly one of the strongest combo’s right now is buy that warthog hotas, Sell joystick, keep throttle and buy the VKB Gkadiator NXT which is the best joystick in its class at present.
This could actually come in under your budget too.
Keeping the joystick does give you an upgrade path to a better gimbal down the line.
Virpil joystick bases are compatible with the Warthog grip straight out of the box.
VKB requires an adaptor or a bit of fiddling to get the Warthog grip to work with the Gunfighter base.
If you go the VKB road then you get probably the best gimbal on the market at any reasonable price with direct compatibility > upgrade path to what is undeniably the best joystick on the market for right handed folks… The Modern Combat Grip Ultra!
Which is supremely sexy and made of proper metal.
And one day…after you have fallen into the bottomless money pit…you will want one!!
Finally.
One of the better places to ask a question like this is on Reddit > r/hotas
Many thanks for that, will have a look now and see
Appreciate you coming back to me
Regards
Barry
No worries friend. Enjoy the new toys!
If you are interested in other flight experiences I can recommend…
IL-2 Cliffs of Dover / Tobruk.
It’s older but still actively developed and runs very nicely on most hardware.
It almost always “on sale” on Steam.
TrackIR compatible. VR compatible/work in progress. (added recently)
IL-2 Great Battles. Can be expensive to buy every map and every aircraft BUT…
You don’t need ALL the maps and ALL the aircraft just the ones you want.
It runs really nicely with TrackIR or VR. Incredible performance.
Looks great too.
Offline or online it’s a great combat flightsim.
IL-2 Flying Circus WW1 combat…
Looks extremely good in VR from the Growling Sidewinder content I’ve seen this month. Am very tempted to have a taste of that myself.
DCS.
Modules (aircraft) and campaign maps etc have a cost.
At its most complex the systems are complex, full depth sim and can be intimidating.
But it doesn’t have to be about learning every procedure in a modern jet fighter. You can buy a spitfire…jump into an online fight and it’s utterly fantastic. (Especially in VR)
Thanks
That reminds me, I do have an Oculus VR headset. Its not the Oculus 2 or Rift 2
Presume the Oculas would work, its brand new as well. Never used it
Outstanding. Give it a whirl in FS2020 see what you think and how you get on.
For me VR really shines in close air combat (guns) and thats why I mentioned IL-2 and why flying Circus is looking really interesting to me.
But for a certain type of VFR flying in FS2020 it’s also great.
Low level, fast. Stunning!
Took the MB339 through the Mach Loop in VR.
Amazing.
Some of the folks on this forum would not fly without it!
So Hotas joystick ordered…thanks for that
Will give VR a go at the weekend
News…
It seems that IL-2 is having a sale right now on their official store. Between 25% and 85%!!!
(Worth noting Official store and Steam purchased stuff isn’t compatible so it’s either Steam or Store.)
As a newbie refugee from X-Plane could I ask how you deal with Yaw please? I’ve always used sticks that twist as I prefer not to have pedals(not much room under my desk). I also enjoy military as well as GA aircraft.
11 months later i doubt the OP will likely read this , but i have a warthog and throttle and its great , rudder i acquired a broken set of pedals from a logitech g25 wheel and took it apart removing the third pedal and moving the centre pedal to the now empty hole in it and using windows joystick control panel to link the two remaining pedals together as one axis and inverted it and all my pc software sees it as g25 pedal set so i can tune the pedals axis in flight sim whichever one i use , DCS i fly a lot in the gazelle so that helicopter uses a lot of rudder pedal in its type of low level flying envelope but almost any racing pedals can be configured the same way
