To go VR or not, that is the question

Ok that’s cool! But stay away from the meta cable , it’s crap

WIFI is more reliable

Yeah i’ve read that, I did get a non-meta brand cable just in case. I don’t have WiFi6 so that will have to come if the cable does not work.

Answering the topic question, in my opinion is an absolutely yes! Very happy with the Meta Quest 3 + Virtual Desktop VDXR, PCVR I7 4gen + RTX4070.

You won’t go back from VR, my experience. I hardly ever fly in 2D, mostly only because i set things up i.e. menu etc (but most works in VR anyways so i don’t need to take my Vive Pro 2 off). Really a different experience. To me, flying on a monitor is comparably in the improvement maybe with having wireframe graphics vs. shaded graphics back then.

Go for it!

Sorry to disagree. I’ve found the official link cable connected to my z790 usb 3.2 type-c port to be rock solid with msfs with both my Q3 and QPro/rtx4090 using 650mbps encoding bitrate. Better distance clarity and 7-10ms less latency than wireless (VD or Air Link). Like everything PCVR, it mainly comes down to your setup and settings imho. Also, personal preferences.

I posted my settings early last month. Some may find these worth looking at;

Yes it depends , I personally was never able to archive a reliable good result with any of the cables. VD in comparison worked instant , robust , with better image quality and better performance - at least on my end

Yeah when I briefly had Quest Pro, I also much preferred cable. WIFI was screwy. Same thing via VD on Pico 4. HDMI ftw!!

VR is totally a other experience then 2D you can not feel the depth in 2D VR is amazing

I tend to agree but if only we could get 4K clarity and high FPS - then it would be a simple decision and I would dump my monitors instantly.

You can achieve this with big enough budget: Pimax Crystal + 7800x3D + 4090. Resolution higher then 4k, good clarity with proper lenses, 35-50 FPS (or higher if you will accept not all settings on ultra).

But its not though is it, it’s sweet spot constantly moves because of the weight of the device too. The clarity is still not good enough, and the fact we still have to deal with a sweet spot is annoying. I think what the previous poster meant, and what I 100% mean is that until we have the clarity and FPS that a 4k display gives us then VR is still not as good. Sure it may pump more pixels that 4K, but it is still no where near close to achieving the image quality that a 4k display gives you. I love the VR depth too, and I am aware of its pro’s which are numerous. However the 2 BIG reasons that I don’t use it are the reason I mentioned above, the clarity and FPS. And also the weight of the things! Especially the crystal. It had me sweating after 45 mins. When they’re the size of glasses, then were talking… This is just my personal opinion, I am sure and I know others feel different about it. This is how I feel.

My opinion. There are big compromises to make. And it’s all far from perfect. But I had never tried VR on PC until I got my headset mainly for using on this sim and I didn’t know what to expect but it has far surpassed how good I imagined it would be.

Simply put, I have not flown on my (nice) monitor a single time since unboxing the VR Quest 3. And I don’t think I will. It is so much more interesting to be “in the world”.

I guess if I really flew tube liners a lot where there are a lot more cockpit systems to read and interact with my view would be different (?) but I am a VFR, Bush and Helicopter flyer mainly. Actually since getting VR I have mainly (80% of my sim time) been enjoying Helicopters. It’s so amazing for them to give you better spatial awareness and control.

I think it would be interesting to see a Venn diagram comparing VR avoiders to primarily tube line pilots. I’ll bet there’s a huge overlap. At least on PC.
Or, put another way, I wonder if the percentage of PC airline pilots vs GA pilots is similar to the percentage of monitor users vs VR users.
As for me, VR and VFR go together. I can very well imagine a virtual airline pilot seeing VR as a huge pain.

I’m used to ride a bicycle in a helmet, so I can also spend hours with Crystal on my head. I’m using Apache strap which helps with comfort and for MSFS experience (no abrupt head movements) the Crystal sits tight and I have zero issues with sweet spot. In my experience the clarity of Crystal running at full resolution is better then 4K display. When it comes to FPS Crystal running at full res requires 6 times more pixels than one 4K display, so indeed one 4K display allows more FPS. But 35-45 FPS in Crystal is enough for me when flying docile civilian planes.
VR is highly personal, so we all may have different perception.
BTW: I fly 100% GA VFR (in sim and IRL). In sim nearly 100% of my flying is VFR GA on VATSIM. And 100% VR, only VR resembles real world flying for me enough to be enjoyable (only in VR I can judged the base turn (you must look 135 degrees back) and flare height properly.

Honestly I would stay with flat screen. VR is going to cost you more for startup and the freezing and stuttering that FS2020 is known for is very noticeable and uncomfortable in VR. I run an RTX4090 and Pimax Crystal. Those two devices alone will cost you upwards of $3000. Not worth it with the current condition of FS2020.

I run a 4080 and a Quest 3 and have a smooth VR experience. Proper config is key.

Proper config…proper config… is that all you guiys know to say???

I’m with PacyFire on this one. RTX4090 & Quest 3 here and get perfectly smooth performance. The visuals are not up to 2D but the immersion more than makes up for that imho. Finding the right settings for your setup is key and I would never go back to 2D.

Same here (though on a 4080). Got it almost fine locked 72fps everywhere now but some Photogrammetry still knocks it out which quite often hitches (small freezes = 0.2 seconds) when turning and I guess it’s loading more detail in. Only happens when turning the AIRCRAFT, not when turning head only. Can’t iron it out but it’s not too bad!

Other PG areas are fine - so it’s hit and miss and doesn’t seem like anything to do with the density necessarily. More to do with optimisation. I don’t know, almost given up. Let’s see if SU15 helps later this week!

4070 here , with quest 3 and I have absolutely usable performance, no stutters and the visuals are good (not 4K but i don’t see any benefit with 4K but on a flat screen with no depth perception and 1:1 size of the environment , I can see more with a proper sized environment than on a flatscreen)
