I wish I had seen this thread earlier.
I just started a trip, on a whim, to circumnavigate the southern hemisphere. I was panning around in Navigraph, and had not realized how many islands there are across the South Pacific with airfields.
It would be relatively easy … relatively … to use a small jet. I’ve crossed Antarctica and the North Pole in the Longitude. But I wanted to be able to stop spontaneously on these small calderas with landing strips to look around, but still have enough range and speed to be able to make those longer legs.
Looking at the specs, I picked the TBM 930, partly for short field ability, partly for range - 1730nm.
I looked at Windy dot com and saw the prevailing winds at FL310 (the TBM’s ceiling) and realized it might work.
The new (newish) Autogen trees look pretty realistic. And some of the islands have surprising little POIs, like gas stations, tour boats, hotels, town squares, etc. I’m only a few days in and it will probably take me a month. Each day is about 1000 nm, with an island stop for lunch, and my route is 23,000 nm.
