TOGA function on 787-10

On B787-10 the TOGA function works randomly.

I’ve mapped 2 keystrokes to activate, first the autothrottles, and then the TOGA function but it works only sometimes.

Other times the keystroke to activate the autothrottles does nothing and so is the case with the keystroke to activate TOGA.

Moreover the light on MCP that indicates that Autothrottle is ON or OFF is not in accordance with the autothrottles switch (the 2 white buttons on MCP)

Well, that light, and the two white switches are two different things.

There are two functions known as A/T in the 787.
One is the standard control for the autothrottles, which are the two white switches.
There is no light which comes on when you turn them on.
You know if they are on or off by the switch position.

The A/T light/button is automatic throttle for speed control, which is actually “airspeed hold”.
This is activated by pressing that light/button, which is why it doesn’t come on when you activate the two upper switches.

I really can’t explain why it sometimes does and doesn’t work.

Yes, you’re right about that. I was making some confusion with the 737’s MCP, on which a green light goes on, when you switch the autothrottle button to the ON position.

As for the TOGA, I was trying to replicate the procedure I do when I take off in the PMDG 777 on FSX. At take-off I turn autothrottle switch on, I move the thrust lever on the joystick to 40-50% of its course and shortly afterwards I press the button on the joystick, which I previously mapped to the TOGA function. The system then applies appropriate thrust for take-off (defined in the FMC) and deactivates the thrust lever on the joystick, since the thrust is now being controlled by the autopilot.

Unfortunatelly I was not able, so far, to replicate this on FS2020.

I think there may be general confusion in the MSFS community about the Autothrottle and autopilot. I’m not as familiar with the Airbus system, but with Boeing they are separate systems that work together. I should be able to engage and use the autothrottle system without ever turning on the autopilot. If I turn off the autopilot with autothrottle engaged, autothrottle should remain on.

The Boeing autothrottle can be set to maintain airspeed or engine setting.

I’m still trying to figure out how it’s working in MSFS. I can’t tell if it’s designed differently or malfunctioning.

The answer is, it is a combination of both.
This is just ASOBO’s take on the A/P and the A/T, it does not mimic the real thing.
On top of that, the functions they have, a lot don’t work correctly.
It is very typical of any default MS aircraft of the older sims.

It seems that, at least with this aircraft (B787-10), the autothrottle only goes ON if we previosly load a flight plan, which is automatically inserted in the FMC (with a lot of bugs and no-working features tough), and then engage LNAV and VNAV on the Autopilot.

It should be possible to turn ON the A/T and then select TOGA for take-off, even if the A/P is only switched ON later.

Well, I think we all would deserve full functional systems on default aircraft, taking into account the price we paid for MSFS.

Maybe we’ll only have those, if we pay extra money for PMDG or Quality Wings airliners, when they eventually come available to MSFS by the end of 2021.
