TOO BRIGHT: Unrealistic and Overexaggerated Airport and Night Lighting in MSFS 2024, bloom too high, light sprites too big, Sepia mask is unrealistic

Yes, the city lighting and other night lighting except the airports seem to be improved

Yes the point source city lights are way better than MSFS2020, almost as good as it was during the 2020 Tech Alpha
But the horrible sepia mask is back with a vengence, what were they thinking

Don’t forget the airport beacons
how come they are rarely if ever visible?

They should have the kind of visibility the rest of the airport lighting currently has.

PS
The missing beacons has become my pet issue. I’m surprised hardly anyone else mentions them. Toning down the airport lights and making beacons visible at a distance and night flying will be really good.

Edge / Taxi lights are way to bright and bloated at long distance, IRL only barely starting to be visible when just a few miles from landing.
Plus, currently whole airports and ground texture are glowing like sepia-colored radioactive wastelands, compare IRL vs sim in these pics, 32,000 ft. Dallas Fort Worth.

Why why was the sepia mask re-introduced like this again, it was one of the most voted issues of MSFS (2020)

I guess Asobo just does not listen to us. We have been saying this forever amongst other things but Asobo decided to add a “purchase liveries” button instead, which of course every simmer wants

Nearly blind after my last approach:

I have never understood why FS, be it 2020 or apparently 2024 (don’t have it) feels the need to exaggerate lights (i.e. bloom) in general and specifically airport lighting. It has always looked very ‘cartoonish’ imo. This same approach is found in other areas of the sim as well.

The goal of a good simulator is to make the virtual world look as close to real life as possible (at least that is my opinion). The goal of a ‘game’ I suspect might be to wow the audience with exotic colors, vibrance, etc.

Given I thought this is supposed to be a (Flight) simulator, which of those two options should always be the final deterring factor when implementing something into FS? My opinion is the former, others may have a different view..

This is really killing immersion

Yes it is. Asobo needs to stop prioritizing fancy effects over realism.

We should only be able to see the airport beacon.

Now let’s wait 6 months for a sim update to solve this and other thousands of reintroduced bugs that could be fixed in two workdays

Correct, the problem in FS is that the beacon can be seen from dozens of miles away as well. Even when the airport is buried in a city. As someone mentioned already, airports are surprisingly hard to pick out at night in general and even harder in a well lit city.

The other thing that should be considered/implemented is PCL (Pilot Control Lighting). In reality only large International (Class B here in the states) are lit 24 hrs a day. Nearly all other airports are only lit for certain hours in the morning and evening (i.e. not all night long)

Outside of those hours pilots use Pilot Controlled Lighting (PCL) With this process the lights are activated by using a certain # of mic clicks when tuned to the airport freq. Once turned on PCL only stays active for a specified # of min based on the last activation (mic clicks) The pilot must keep them going if desired by clicking the mic button again every so often.

It is quite a treat when you turn from base to final landing at a rural airport and ‘out go the lights’ because ‘that guy’ forgot to click the mic again on downwind
ask me how I know    :pensive:

Pilot controlled lighting for uncontrolled airports would be an awesome addition. Would make night IFR “fun” if you forgot to turn the lights on.

Agreed, it should also be done at controlled airports outside of normal operating hours. Definitely for uncontrolled as you said.

Downside is not sure that learning what it takes to actually fly a plane would be much fun for a lot of ‘the growing market’ sadly.

we will wait a long moment to see this issues being fixed, it’s sad

For me the problem is the bloom / halo on the runway lighting when you are about take off mainly.

From the air, the ground lighting looks ok in this shot:

But in this one below the ground lighting looks totally exaggerated

Some things can be justified with a new Game/Simulator/Engine. But what is that, please? The lights on the Taxiway are almost as big as balloons, how ridiculous.

So that’s a step backwards instead of a step forward.
What did they actually learn from FS 2020? To make everything even more stupid, childish and ridiculous?

I was going to post the same - but your ramp shot is a much better example of the problem
The airport lighting is really distracting

Agree with this also. The taxiway lights particularly are way too bright and can be seen from space. Please tone them down!

Looks like 100000 people having a light festival from distance.
