Too small size for a scenery new cache

Hello,

I tried to use the rolling cache feature. The manual cache is set to 15 GB and the rolling cache is set to 10 GB. Specific on line options have obviously been activated excepted traffic and multi players.
I created a small zone with medium and high density. The process worked fine but the resulting size is less than 1 MB which seems to be very small even if the covered area is also a small one.

The current data consumption is about 60 GB. I have not well understood what is the exact meaning of this feature and what is the link with the rolling cache option if any.

Thank you for explanations
Best regards

PS Explanations on these features (data consumption, caches) are not clear on the net. All what I read was very confusing.

If the area you are caching doesn’t contain Photogrammetry, it will be relatively small.

All things being equal, unless you have a very slow Broadband connection and/or a data cap imposed by your ISP, you won’t get a lot of value with manual cache.

Hello,
Thank you for answering. I thought that only some cities (8 in France) containing photogrammetry data were already displayed in the simulator with such technology and that for others locations we had to use streaming or rolling cache for getting needed data at these locations, of course if such data was available on the net.
Best regards

If you go to Options-General-Data, you can turn off Photogrammetery and Bing Maps which streams to your PC.

Photogrammetery is not available on your PC unless you manuallly cache an area with Photogrammetry. Otherwise, Photogrammetery and Bing Maps (which gives proper generic buildings in places that are not Photogrammetery enabled) must be streamed all the time to your PC.

I did the whole of Dublin and was only 1mb… but when i did only Manhattan it was 10gb

This is the list of Photogrammetry cities before Japan and US updates.

Dublin is not one of them, hence the small cache size.

Hello,
I have not understood if it was necessary to run features “streaming” or “rolling cache” for cities with photo realistic label in the MSFS list. If not is there a way to know where are locations for which these features may improve the default scenery ?
Another thing is not clear for me is how works the “current consumption” feature ?
Best regards

If you keep flying in same area over and over again, the rolling cache is for you because it saves were you have been. If you don’t want to stream photogrammetry cities you have to manually frame the outlines of the cities you are interested in such as Paris or New York. You’ll be streaming everything else then but the cities you manually chose will be taken from your harddrive. This only eliminates low bandwidth issues, it’ll still be more demanding on frames than non-photogrammetry areas. Rolling cache is pretty much a permanent virtual memory that doesn’t get wiped upon system restart.

Hello,

I created two rolling caches for Aix and Marseille these cities being in the list of official photogrammetry locations and the resulting sizes were only of several MB. It means these locations have already the photo-realistic statute in the downloaded simulator.

Then my question is again : how can we know if a specific location has the potential to be improved by streaming or rolling cache ?

I apologize for such question meaning I certainly do not have really understood what is behind these features.
Best regards

You did this by flying over Dublin, thus the city was cached, or was there a way to pick it directly to be saved?

If you saved Aix to your hard drive in High Quality cache, the sim will pull that data from your PC when flying over it.

Rolling cache contains the last X (your choice) GB of data you flew over. Theoretically, that would be Aix if you just flew over it.

It will save you data consumption pulling Aix from the Internet.

The data consumption number shows how much data you have pulled from the Internet into FS for the last thirty days if you did not change settings like add a quota/limit.

This helps people manage costs if they pay their Internet provider for a fixed data limit every billing cycle.

Also, the data consumption is a detective clue to tell you if Photogrammetry and Bing Maps is actually streaming. Assuming you fly over any other area not in your Manual Cache, and you have Photogrammetry and Bing Maps ON, you should see good graphics while flying AND that data number increases.

Also, Photogrammetry can be small, the reason Manhattan NY USA is enormous is you’re mapping a 12-13 mile island filled with buildings. I had to break Manhattan in half when I first cached it because the UI would stop responding when painting from Battery Park to Mid-Town.

Smaller cities may result in small caches, even with Photogrammetry. The key is to make sure you are painting or selecting in the Manual Cache using High Quality to capture all of the potential Photogrammetry.

Thanks! Figured out how to frame outlines. Stoked that my little suburb of Houston was one of the cities picked! But taking forever to try to frame Houston, one tiny section at a time. Looks like a 35 minute download for part of it. Can’t wait to see how much space that is gonna take.

so how much space did it take up?

Not sure, I gave up trying. Too much distance to cover.
