Tree Draw Distance / LOD Issues

Good afternoon everybody,

This is the post Jorg needs to read. On Dec 23 / 2020 Bijan Studio released a tree fix which fixed the tree issues, at the time, in “grand fashion” he gave everybody a “wonderful Xmas present of tree’s as far as the eye could see” with little or no impact on the system. One fact is undeniable, that nobody understood what the real cause of the tree problems were in the first place back then. Both Bijan and I figured everybody would figure it out on their own after it went out in the wild but nobody including Asobo were unable to figure out what the root cause of the problem was back then. So here it is. It was the “jungle tree”. It was too big. When Bijan removed it, it crippled the ecosystem because the tree was used extensively around the world. So Bijan rewrote the ecosystem, taking about 140 hours to do so. That is what happened. It is my opinion that Asobo failed to recognize what the problem was and unfortunately due to a lack of transparency resulting in no documentation whatsoever in any of the updates is now troubling for many people, including 3rd parties trying to fix it. As it tweaked the tree’s in a negative way in the background these tweaks in turn has become obviously problematic and unfortunately has had a negative impact on Bijans work and others as they have tried to correct the situation on their own but each update cripples their work. I’m glad, this is the guy working hard on trees. I just wanted people to know what happened.

As far as I’m concerned, Bijan has always gotten it right when it comes to the lumber business. This is not to put Asobo’s efforts down hard but only to show perhaps they need special help where they can’t help themselves as it seems. I’m promoting this man, not his business because in the end he will make this sim a “visually beautiful world”. I think this is what we all want.

Roll back the trees to DEC 23, activate the distance by tree size again and all problems should be fixed, install Bijans latest and Bob’s your uncle.

Please, everybody have a nice day.

Cheers,
Stay safe,
PACO572

even though i would want to stop right here as you put it as eloquently as you did.
i did fiddle around with the LOD setting to get a idea of what this sim/game could look like

No credit to the free tree distance mod authors?

I’ll also add my grain of salt : I can definitely see lines in the trees’ mass. Like if trees were not evenly distributed. It wasn’t happening on release (but hey, almost every beautiful feature of the sim has been downgraded since release so…).

What I hope is that the Xbox Beta we have been testing (cuz’ whe have, and Asobo should stop denying it :innocent: ) hopefully ends when it gets out for Xbox, and then maybe the downgrade madness will eventually end.

Cheers.

Rob on the avsim forums seems to have made a major step forward in making a new mod fix for this issue. (i can’t post the link, just google it…)

At this point I just find it hard to accept, that the community fixes this problem before the devs even properly adressed it…

I just hope the fix actually works and that the devs don’t mess it up again…

If it does work hopefully it’s not a paid mod and the workaround will be made public.

i fear that aswell especially from the “looking for more beta testers”

it does look promising:

I agree with you, though it is hard to pinpoint exactly what else has been downgraded. The trees for sure, but what else do you think has?

I think (maybe I’m wrong) those have been downgraded :

  • Tree density (I remember I could not see lines and patterns in the forest, now I can)

  • Tree and building appearing distance

  • Clouds (it is the most disappointing downgrade imho, those where insane on release)

  • ground texture at distance

Yep I think I can agree with all of that. It is all very disappointing isn’t it. I used just to be blown away when the sim first came out, just not so anymore. Really sad, and I don’t even think the performance has increased so I just don’t understand why they have done it. I saved up for a long time to build an absolute top of range PC to enjoy the new sim on absolute max settings, and I just feel cheated because with everything on max it looks nowhere near as good as it used to.

Note to mods: Sorry, I forgot to search for similar topic. Will remember that next time!

A lot of my flying is spent over forests, specially Brazilian Amazon. Its important for immersion to see tropical forest stretching to the horizon. But it stops suddenly making it look like just a garden :no_mouth:

Not asking for hi-rez trees all the way to horizon but could Microsoft do something to give the illusion of that in a future update? What can we do? Will this be fixed?

Yellow arrows show where the tree line ends.

It will be a payware mod (when released)

https://simhorizon.com/

At the bottom of that page…

  • Full License – unlimited access to all features
  • 14-Day Trial – unlimited access to all features for 30 days
  • 14-Day Trial Expired – limited to usage of 4 vegetation presets and no ability to modify presets*

So still sounds pretty functional without costing any money.

What happens when someone figures out the method used to increase the tree range from this mod and offers a free version?

So in last Q&A was said, that tree’s draw distance will be improved in Sim Update 5… (27 July)

Sounds good and also shown videos looked little bit better, I hope public release of SU 5 won’t end up with improvement by 0.1 mile…

Also I still do not get why they won’t implement draw distance sliders in settings, which is the easiest solution.

…or just take a look on what was changed with the december update and roll it back?

They said in the Q&A that they found the bug that connected the tree draw distance to latitude and this will be fixed. So at least this problem should be gone. If the overall draw distance (that should then be the same all over the world) is sufficient and comparable to earlier versions, we will see.

Big chance the good old trees draw distance fix mods will work again, after the latitude bug is gone.

After almost a year and all the previous patches I’d say: don’t get your hopes up. Though that one dies last I guess…

Haha, for me, SU5 on July 27 still lacks the trees draw distance fix. Been so many disappointments because of Asobo since the release last year. The MSFS has potential but Jorg’s eagerness to make as much money as quickly as possible eventually kills the series. The bugs should be fixed first, not making useless World Updates or Maverick add-ons before the sim is flyable.
