I’ve had HAGS off for a long time (most devs adviced against using it anyway). Switched it to ON, and now i get much better perf. (~5-8 fps) and smoother. CPU load seems much less. Maybe worth a try!
i9-11900, 32 ram, 3070ti, dlss-quality.
EDIT: I’ve wrongly posted this topic under VR performance. I should have posted it under Community performance, because i don’t use VR. Don’t know how to correct that. Sorry for that.
I’ve almost always run with Hags on as I found I got better performance that way.
Had to turn it off for the previous 2 Nvidia drivers as it would cause a CTD with MSFS if I used DX12.
Your post reminded me I hadn’t tried it since I updated to the latest Nvidia driver (526.98).
I tried it today and for my system (3700X, 2070 Super @ 1440p) it’s now working very well, smooth and consistent performance.
Certainly worth a try for any that haven’t revisited it recently.
I thought the consensus had long been that if you had a 3000 series GPU, or higher, then having HAGS enabled was beneficial. I’ve always run with it on since getting my 3080.
To be fair though there does seem to be a lot of conflicting reports regarding HAGS and the sim.
Like anything with this sim on PC, everyones experience will vary with their systems/setups.
But I’m seeing better results with it on with my 2000 series GPU again.
As I said, certainly worth a try, it’s only a matter of putting the option on and rebooting PC, do a few test flights and if you don’t like it you can turn it off again.
Like most things, helps some hinders others. Best action is to try it out; if no better reverse whatever you did i.e. HAGS on or off. Go with whatever is best for you.
I can aggree on win10, 2080ti… seems at least if users want try DX12 then HAGS setting bring seemingly a beneffit. I have this setting now 3…4 weeks in test and system is better utilized in that combination and most important, it seems also HAGS stability issues not happend in that time. ( but I also know: the first occurence of a bsod and I know it was HAGS again , e.g. because of a new driver version , like so often )
Once again I made research on HAGS to better understand what this mysterious acronym do in real life. And I finally found a blog dated June 30, 2020 by Microsoft explaining really clearly what is it and does.
In summary, instead of having the CPU handling a high-priority thread running on the CPU that coordinates, prioritizes, and schedules the work submitted by various applications, Windows can now offload most of GPU scheduling to a dedicated GPU-based scheduling processor when HAGS is ON. This only work on recent GPU and imply big changes in the way drivers are written.
So my first guess is HAGS ON will lower more or less CPU resources and redirect task to the GPU.
So my second guess is: if you are CPU limited HAGS ON should be good, and if you are GPU limited, keep it OFF. That’s need to be verified*
And my third guess: HAGS ON is the future according Microsoft, and IMHO, one day the option will stay ON forever and will disappear from Windows graphics settings menu.
For the braves:
*edit:
Made some tests using Cyberpunk 2070 as its benchmark is consistent on my machine.
Running this benchmark (3 run) with vsync OFF, so GPU limited, HAGS OFF give between 72.0 and 72.06 fps, and HAGS ON give between 73,23 and 73.28 fps.
Interesting, even GPU limited HAGS ON give some light improvement.
More investigations needed
what HAGS do and that it can bring a beneffit, was more or less clear… the big problem with HAGS was allways, that it caused extreme strange issues, bsod, etc… I really hope they ( gpu drivers, OS ) managed that now finally and the ages of that fails are gone
MSFS is very inconstant that’s why I never use it to test drivers and other changes to see if they make any improvement. You can launch ten times MSFS in a raw, and get 10 different performance reports. One time is smooth, an hour later you relaunch and it’s stutter festival.
I use synthetic benchmarks for pure raw performance, and a few games included benchmark for real case usage (Cyberpunk, Tomb Raider, Horizon Zero Dawn, etc.). Those ones are constant, at least on my machine, the margin of error is 1 fps max.
Bump! (sorry) But whats the status of enabling HAGS today? DX11? DX12? How about Game mode? Im gaming in DX11, 3060Ti and 5600X, 2560x1440, 72 fps. Whats your recommendation? No stutters now (exept for when traffic and mp is on), but som longer freezes (under a second) is going on…
I’m having a stutter free experience now on a 9700k@5ghz and over clocked RTX 3060 12 GB and running maxed out at 2160p while running DLSS quality mode. Though to get there I had to reinstall windows 11 and start again from scratch, with the latest bios installed for my z390-f gaming MB. It’s never run this good before.
