Trying to record with OBS

Hey gang,

I’m trying to record in OBS, but I’m failing miserably. It records, but all I get is a black screen, for the entire length of the recording.

I’ve followed multiple tutorials on YouTube, but it’s always the same result. I have a feeling the problem occurs when I’m selecting the window to record (vrmonitor.exe, steamvr,etc.). All the videos I’ve watched seem to be leaving out steps, but i can’t figure out which ones.

I can record with Nvidia shadowplay, but i don’t like the binocular view.

Is there anyone with an up-to-date, concise, step-by-step tutorial.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated

****UPDATE - been doing some experimenting, and what’s happening, is that when I switch to vr (via ctrl+tab), vrmonitor.exe shuts down. This at least explains why it’s only recording a black screen. Now i have to figure out why vrmonitor.exe shuts down when i switch to vr.

Is there any reason you cannot just add your full display as a source (and then crop it if needed), rather than trying to select the game directly?

This is how I do it with my DAW for example that OBS does not recognise.

I don’t follow. Could you elaborate, by any chance? I’m new to game recording, so none of this makes any sense, at this point :joy:

When you hit record do you see the image you want to record in OBS. If not you need to setup a source to be a view. I sometimes pick an application to record but mostly just choose one or more of my monitors.

Add Source > Display Capture
As opposed to
Add Source > Game Capture

Before i open msfs2020, it seems to be looking at my steamvr home cabin. Then i launch the sim from in there. I’m assuming that’s what it’s looking at, after i toggle the recording to on. But it’s hard to tell because msfs opens in full screen.

I just subscribed to your channel. When you make the video, can you go into as much detail as possible, for those of us that don’t quite get what the hell they’re doing?:grin::smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

When i go to select the window, i don’t get msfs2020.exe as an option. Does it have to be running first?

I think it does the very first time but after that remembers it.

like EdamllamaB say, thats it

i never lauch the simulator from VR
just start from steam in 2d. at the runnway i switch to VR
you can also try to capture the simulator in 2d with obs first.

No matter which way i try, i never see msfs2020.exe as an option :man_shrugging:

I use SLOBs with a Quest 2, so this may or may not apply. But I use Oculus Mirror and have Game Capture set as a source. Mode - capture specific window Window - [OculusMirror.exe]: Oculus Mirror

Note - make sure you have an Oculus Mirror window open when you set up the game capture so it appears in the dropdown list of windows when you set this up.

When you want to record, make sure you have the mirror window set up and sized properly. In the shortcut target Start In path for the Mirror shortcut, I have the flag --Size 1280 720 set so that it pops up in a good size for stream capture. Matches my stream window size.

It gives a really nice view when streaming VR. Here’s the latest stream I did last night on a VATSIM event in VR with the JF Arrow… more examples up on that channel too. Good luck and let me know if any questions.

There’s also the option of using FCR (FlightControlReplay) to make your videos. I bought it a long time ago but haven’t tried it yet (can’t be bothered with vids any more).

There are some vids on YT showing recordings of flights in VR using the utility.

I’ve gotten great results like this.

  1. I use the in-game recording option. It’s under the developer menu unless in SU10 beta it’s in the experimental menu. You can record a flight while in VR.
  2. To modify the recording you switch to 2-D mode and modify the recording as you want. You can’t modify it or play it in VR mode because it just doesn’t work.
  3. When you get the video how you want it, you play it (while in 2D mode) and then you can use OBS to record the 2D game window.

It takes a little work this way but you get great results. Good luck.
