Trying to Update, not enough disk space?

What on earth is going on?

I bought a dedicated 256GB SD HD for FS and now it’s telling me it’s too small?

Currently using 161GB and there is 76GB free. How big is this update?

The Premium and Deluxe upgrade are 2.21 and 2.47 GB. What is going on with the calculation?

This is way beyond frustrating!

This is baffling. What system are you using to have to use a “256GB SD HD”. :astonished:

The grayed out Update button appears to read 94 GB? You might need at least that much space (usually the installer rule of thumb is 1.5 - 2x space based on the file size being updated on the target partition to be free) to cover decompression. Many of the files come over in pieces to ease transmission and file integrity checking. Then they’re assembled, overwriting files to be updated while adding new ones.

I myself have a 500GB NVME SSD dedicated solely to MSFS, and it’s nearly 40 percent full. Yet I have so many pieces of the Premium and Deluxe packages not installed, plus only 15GB of Community Mods and no Manual or Rolling Cache. Both the main Program (about 1.5 GB) plus the Packages (currently 140GB or so) are all on this physical partition.

I find that one has to be absolutely ruthless about what to install. I mostly fly CONUS and EU areas, so all other stock airports regionally get the boot. Huge EU airports like that ridiculous one that’s almost 5GB in size? Out. Airliners? Don’t fly 'em, so only the generic models for AI traffic are installed. GA planes were culled down to the Cessnas and the JMB. World Updates? Same-same. Don’t fly there, don’t need it. That’s how I manage to keep a large enough free space overhead, for now.

I expect by about year 3 or 4 (which will be here before you know it), minimum is at least 1TB, maybe 1.5.

Everything ok.

Below download size.

110.96+2.21+2.47=115.64GB

Below size on disk.

You need 100GB (or more) free disk space.

I have the same problem! Size of necessary update: 396,17 MB. Free disc space: ~60 GB. Update button is greyed out (“UPDATE (85,59GB)”). I can’t update and start the game.

Thank you for your suggestion!

It appears to be a bug that FS needs 85,59 GB free disk space for a 396,17 MB update…

Might not be the answer to your particular problem, but how much room is on your drive where you have your temp folder assigned? I have run into this several times with other software where the install disk had plenty of room but the disk where the temp folder was filled. I moved my temp folders to a Terabyte drive and have eliminated such problems. Like I stated, might not apply here, but worth checking out all the same.

Thanx for your reply!

The disc to which the temp folder is assigned to has 262 GB of free space…

Well, it was a thought - hope you get it sorted - tracking down those type of problems when it appears you have enough disk space are always frustrating - best of luck

I ended up uninstalling FS and what a nightmare it was to reinstall it. I don’t understand why we have to jump through so many hoops just to install it.

I had to download windows store update, my downloads kept pausing for no reason and i couldn’t start it. then finally I had to install something for xbox and then that app took over. It blows my mind how these steps are not even on the microsoft store. then i realize i’m not the only one and there are people out there uploading a 1 hour youtube video on how to install a game.

I don’t understand why Microsoft is over complicating the setup process when all you need is NEXT, I AGREE, NEXT, NEXT, OPEN

I have the same problem.
Version: Deluxe, packages folder on an external ssd.
External SSD Disk space free: 26GB
Update Size: 16.42 GB (This is the update size, right?)
Size on Browse button: 104,05 GB (What size is this?)

Error: Not enough disk space.
Any clues? Or just delete everything and reinstall?

104 GB is close to a Standard Full install of the Sim (~110 GB) before you go into Content Manager and add anything you bought from Marketplace, Optional Content like World Updates, and anything you’re entitled to if you’re also a Premium or Premium Deluxe license holder.

So, TL;DR - it thinks you want to reinstall the whole Sim.

It looks like it. Today I shall uninstall / reinstall it. I did that once before, so I think the installer is broken somewhere in counting / verifying files.

I completely deleted the Sim again, and now it will install / update. Defenitely something wrong with the size calculation.

I ended up doing the same thing. Annoying but spending time trying to fix it was not getting anywhere.
