Turn off ASW for SU5

Hello everyone this is a quick post to say that I went from horrible performance to amazing performance by turning off ASW since SU5. I was one of those for which the performance degraded, everything became jittery after the update. A few days later I tried to fiddle with settings and turned off ASW, and that really did it for me.
Enjoy the sim Guys and thanks Asobo for the optimization.

What is ASW?

Oculus Asynchronous Spacewarp (ASW) something like Valves Motion Smoothing

Anti-Submarine Warfare?

It only works to an extent. Turning ASW off makes the sim smoother when there’s not too much movement going on or when your FPS is decent. But if FPS drops too low or you start performing manoeuvres then it looks horrible. The longer stutters are merely replaced with super-fast stutters which make the whole world look blurred during movement, and will very likely lead to motion sickness in some people.

You’re better off turning it off, monitoring your FPS for a while to see what level your system can maintain, and then setting ASW to the next step below whatever your average FPS is. That should reduce the worst of the stuttering while still keeping most of the benefits of ASW.

MSFS sadly don’t manage ASW 2.0 right now, only the first v1.0 version. With the v2.0 artifacts are greatly reduced to not say eliminated completely. I can’t stand ASW 1.0, so it’s always OFF for me, with 45 fps locked, until MSFS devs manage v2.0 (if they do one day). Pretty smooth usually. Can’t really comment on SU5 as I just made a quick VR tour to check gain on GPU usage.

ASW 30
on rtx 3090 the following works well with 80 render scaling. lower pd for lower processor or graphics card use commands below as batch file for OculusDebugToolCLI .If you do not know how google will help.

server:asw.clock30
service set-pixels-per-display-pixel-override 1.85
service set-Adaptive-GPU-Performance-Scale Off
exit

You also need to reset your graphics options on load as does not seem to remember or display correctly. Even if set right change and reapply .
I can only get Asobo planes to fly well everything else horrible . DC6 has been updated and should work well have done little testing though. This my hardware so lower hardware will be different . Most settings on ultra and 200 LOD.

I don’t do this. It is true that you lose some FPS (maybe 5 which is huge in VR) when ASW in ON, but it’s still smoother than without.

I can maintain 36fps rendered at 72fps and this is the best compromise so far for me so I chose to keep 45 locked.
I tried 30 but there is way too many artifacts, the refresh rate is way too low.

I also tried with ASW off but everything is stuttering unless you don’t move your head at all. Try an horizontal translation with your head in the cockpit and look at the gauges, you’ll see what I mean.

Hi … I use a text file with commands for OculusDebugToolCli.exe.
Adaptive-GPU and FOV-Tangent give error.
Can you help me ?
Thanks !!

server:asw.Off
service set-pixels-per-display-pixel-override 1.0
service set-Adaptive-GPU-Performance-Scale Off
service set-FOV-Tangent-Multiplier 0.75;0.75

Some days ASW is the only thing that makes MSFS2020 playable. Some days ASW is the only thing that keeps MSFS2020 from being unplayable. It’s crazymaking.

I think I am going to go Reverb G2/WMR. Oculus/Facebook is starting to really get on my nerves.

I think the semi colon is not needed, and not exactly the same syntax. This below worked for me when tried different fov values. Old file (I play now ASW OFF):

server:asw.Clock45
service set-pixels-per-display-pixel-override 1.7
service set-client-fov-tan-angle-multiplier 1.0 1.0
exit

Don’t forget that ASW 2.0 exists but for some reason, MSFS uses the 1.0 version which is horrible and creates crazy artifacts.
I wouldn’t blame Oculus if Asobo uses an old and obsolete version.

It worked
Thanks !!
