Tweaking in the Dark

Tweaking the settings has been a thing in MSFS since the 1980s to the point that up until 2020 it was requisite to tailor the game to one’s own computer capabilities. However, now that ‘fixes’ and ‘patches’ are being streamed I hesitate to get into the weeds with settings as who knows what they are changing on the server side day to day.

For instance for days I was getting lock ups when entering VR. I’d get to the point of Control/Tabbing into VR and the screen would freeze with no way out. This morning I tried it again and it’s working now. So it leads my to believe if I had went down the rabbit hole of trying to fix it I might have done something to make things worse, because I don’t know what MSFS is doing on the server side.

It’s like we are chasing each other’s tails in the dark. And I can’t help but think MSFS is ‘silently’ streaming fixes to make the game seem less buggy than it actually was on release. But, they aren’t, in all cases - telling us what they are doing. So how can you tweak settings without the risk of making things worse on our end?

This of course just reinforces the notion that MSFS 2024 is first and foremost a console game and the PC side is being left behind. We are a week away from the game being a month old and they’ve only publicly announced two patches? That can’t be right - so again I think they are madly tweaking things behind the scenes.

That said, when I look out a side window in VR I’m still getting micro-stutters. I’m not saying it’s a slide show, in the way we often use that phrase. It’s a very fast slide show to be sure, but its very noticeable and very annoying.
