[UltraATC] Touring Colorado (Live ATC)

Touring Colorado is going to be UltraATC’s first large scale event. Featuring 14 different airports, 6 of which will be considered primary airports with a control tower while the remaining 8 will be uncontrolled or under Denver Center’s control. We will also have 3 guided high altitude tours including the royal gorge and some crazy mountain passes in Colorado while also exploring some of the rich mining history in Gunnison County. We are also going to be releasing a custom airport for KGUC for a large “fly-in” event. All aircraft and flight types are allowed. The event will start at 16:30 EST and continue until no aircraft are left.

How To Join:

UltraATC uses a customized version of the FlightEvents software. This software allows us to take advantage of your planes built in radio stack. Whenever you switch frequencies on your plane it will automatically move you to the Discord channel associated with that frequency.

  1. Download and setup the UltraATC Client
  2. Join the UltraATC Discord
  3. Connect to Crew Lounge channel in the UltraATC Discord
  4. Disable AI ATC: Settings → Assistance → User Experience ->ATC Voices
  5. Flight Conditions:
    a. Multiplayer: All Players
    b. Air Traffic: Off
    c. Weather & Time: Live
    d. Server: US East
  6. Spawn at a GATE/PARKING at any of the airports below. Do not spawn on a runway.
  7. Press “Connect” as a pilot in the UltraATC Client then fill out the required flight plan. (Some examples are included in the documents listed below.)

Airport Information:

We have quite a few airports open for this event. Some of these airports will be completely controlled by Denver Center while others will have a designated Tower and/or Ground controller. Some airports featured are normally uncontrolled but are being converted to Class D airports for use during the event. If you plan on departing from one of these airports during the event we ask that everyone use the provided ATC services.

Denver International Airport (KDEN)

Denver International airport also known as DIA is the largest airport in North America and also the second largest in the world. Denver also serves the longest public use runway in North America. Runway 16R/34L totals at 16,000ft, just over 3 miles. Denver will serve as the main hub for the Touring Colorado event. We will have our most experienced controllers in this area who are always up for the challenge.

Salt Lake City International Airport (KSLC)

Salt Lake City International is the closest airport for roughly 2.5 million people. SLC also serves as a hub for Delta Air Lines making it a great departure or arrival for the UltraATC Touring Colorado Event.

Gunnison/Crested Butte Regional Airport (KGUC)

Passengers at Gunnison are mainly vacationers coming to the area for year-round outdoor activities, such as skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, mountain biking, fishing, rafting, hiking and camping. The terminal is one large building with two jetbridge gates, two ground-level gates, and a variety of rental car or shuttle bus companies. One baggage claim area in the lower lobby level houses a single carousel and a dedicated ski/oversize baggage slide. The airport sees limited regional jet service during the summer from Denver and Houston on United Express; however, frequent larger aircraft service during winter months occurs from additional cities. Gunnison also features one of the longest high altitude runways in North America. Making it a great place for military exercises.

During the Touring Colorado event Gunnison will act as a main hub. All aircraft and flight types are recommended to fly into Gunnison at least once during the event to participate in the complicated approach and beautiful scenery in the area. We urge all users to download the UltraATC airport addon for KGUC. This addon will feature a custom large ramp to meet the needs of the mass amount of pilots joining us.

Telluride Regional Airport (KTEX)

Telluride is the highest commercially available airport in the United States. Featuring a 9,078 foot runway in a remarkable mountain valley. This airport sits on top of a plateau making it a very challenging approach for even the most seasoned pilots. Flights between Gunnison and Telluride are highly recommended for the Touring Colorado event.

Grand Junction Regional Airport (KGJT)

Grand Junction Airport is the largest airport in western Colorado and the 3rd largest overall. Located right next to a tall ridge line makes this airport a very complicated area to manage traffic due to the one sided approach. It also serves as the midpoint between SLC and all of the other featured airports.

Event Documents:

We understand that most simulation pilots have limited experience when it comes to talking with ATC. To help with that we have put together some documents below to show the procedures and general flow of ATC communications:

Touring Colorado ATC Details (In progress)
UltraATC Piloting Procedures (In progress)
General ATC Communications for IFR and VFR (In Progress)
How to File a Flight Plan (In progress)

*Note some of our documents are still in progress. We expect to have them complete earlier this week before the event to give everyone ample time to review them.

FAQ:

Why can’t I talk on the frequency channels?

Push-to-talk must be enabled and a key binded in your discord settings. To enable this feature navigate to: Settings → Voice & Video → Input Mode. Select “Push to Talk” then set the desired key in the box below.

Why can’t I join one of the frequency channels?

Channels dedicated to ATC communications are reserved for only ATC communication. You must join the “Crew Lounge”, be logged into the UltraATC Client, and tuned to the correct frequency in your plane to join these channels.

Why is my callsign invalid?

Callsigns must have no hyphens (-) and must not contain any spaces

Why am I required to fill out a flight plan?

We are requiring flight plans to be filed for all users participating in the event due to the sheer quantity of expected flights. This helps take some of the workload off of our controllers during times of high traffic volumes. If you need help filing a flight plan you can take a look at some of the attached documents.

How do I become an ATC?

Currently we are not accepting any new ATC until after the event. After the Touring Colorado Event we will open up ATC to anyone who completes a mandatory small training course which mostly focuses on setting up the required software.
