Unable to log into MS account, credentials window self-deselects

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:

I cannot log into my Microsoft account in the game’s start screen because when the login window where I am supposed to enter my credentials appears, the moment I select the window to enter them it instantly deselects itself and thus prevents any entry. Please refer to the linked video to see how exactly it looks. It is a fresh install, no mods or anything.

This happens no matter if I click, use the keyboard to select, or start my password manager and use its autofill function. It doesn’t matter whether I run the game in fullscreen or windowed. It does not matter if I close every other application on the PC that is not required. And yes, I have restarted the PC already.

I can log into my account, outlook, etc, on my browser, the office programs, etc. It’s just this simulator which refuses to cooperate.

Is this on PC?

Are you able to sign in to your account with a web browser on the same PC?

If so, I suggest quitting MSFS, and try opening the Xbox app, and signing in with your account there first, then try MSFS?

Is your PC account a local account or a Microsoft online account?

Yes, as the tags state it’s the Steam version.

Yes, as said I can log into my MS account anywhere else just fine: “I can log into my account, outlook, etc, on my browser, the office programs, etc. It’s just this simulator which refuses to cooperate.”

Xbox app is not installed on this PC. I have no use for it.

I am using an MS account on my PC.

Might be worth trying to Install it from the MS store, sign in to it, then try MSFS. I think it might be required (but I’m not sure).

I have a new PC with a generic Windows 11 install and the Xbox app had to be signed in for me to activate with the Insider Hub (in beta testing).

Ok, I tried that. Downloaded the Xbox app, confirmed that it had my login correct (auto-filled by my PC login, I guess) and started MSFS24, same result as before. Restarted the PC to be sure and repeated it, starting the Xbox app before Steam and the simulator, but the problem persists in exactly the same way.

So that was not it, thank you for that hint anyways.

Sorry I noticed the tag on this thread is for Steam (I have never used Steam) so my help is of limited value! I’m not sure how Steam and Microsoft authentication interact… Does Steam need to have your Microsoft credentials signed in somehow?

Only a few other things I can think of:

As far as I am aware Steam and the sim don’t interact at all past installing the launcher and accessing the Steam wallet via the Steam overlay in the ingame marketplace - or at least that was how it worked in MSFS(2020). Which, by the way, is logged into the same account when I boot it up with no problem whatsoever. I couldn’t tell you if that changed in the successor, that’d be a question for the devs.

There is no cloud save data - this is the very first time I installed MSFS24. It’s completely fresh. I don’t even get to the point where it lets me install the rest of the data that isn’t the launcher provided by Steam, because the sign-in to Xbox comes before that step.

I tried the reinstall just now, 5.7 gigs are downloaded quickly enough. Still exactly the same issue, the line where I am supposed to enter my email address deselects itself the same moment it is selected.

That’s frustrating. Anything unusual about your network, or Region settings? Are you using a VPN (maybe disable it)? or custom DNS? Not sure what else it could be.

If I was in your position I would be considering erasing the computer and doing a fresh generic install of Windows (but that’s just my personal way of dealing with trouble like that). I’m sure there must be a solution that doesn’t require a full PC reset… hoping someone else will have better insight for you.

Edit - in another thread, full screen mode was an issue for login… maybe try Alt Enter (key combo to switch between full screen and window mode)?

No, nothing special, really. No VPN or anything, and it really doesn’t look like a connectivity issue in the first place. I don’t know if you looked at the video file I linked, but it really just seems to be the sim’s UI throwing a fit.

Try window mode (alt enter)

Other than that, I know there are various “Gaming Services” and Credential Manager services in Windows - and the issue is likely there somewhere.

If you Google “Steam MSFS unable to sign in to microsoft” the AI response offers a lot of places to look… might be worth a shot

I already tried windowed mode. It is not the old problem where I can’t interact with the window, as you can see in the video. I can click stuff just fine, and everything else in the window works - except anything where I would enter my data.

I have already worked my way through a lot of guides like this one, to no avail.

I have, however, now been able to brute-force the issue. Here’s how:

I have been able to determine that once I clicked the line, it was selected for a few milliseconds. I have thus made a script that would select the line and enter the login data all within the blink of an eye. Because the rest of the UI functioned as normal, I was then able to proceed. I had to repeat the same thing for my password, but the authenticator code I was then able to enter normally, as whatever problem the email and password lines had, the authenticator line did not share it.

And that’s it, logging into my account worked with that and I was able to continue. Now at the setup screen:

Thank you for trying to help!

Yikes. Glad it worked, but I’d be wondering why it was behaving that way - like some anti-virus interference, or worse, malware trying to steal info, activating when it sees a login screen…?

Would be weird if it was the antivirus, because that one’s the default MS one that a ton of others have, too. I also doubt it is any sort of malware - if it was, it would be sabotaging itself by not letting me enter my credentials. And as I said, I had none of those issues anywhere else.

I have the same problem since a few weeks, but it is independently of MSFS. Even outside of the simulator in the Chrome or Edge browser, I can not log in to any Microsoft Account or the Xbox Account for the MSFS 2024 Flight Planer App. I can not write my email and password and I can not choose from my saved login accounts. A new start on my Windows 11 PC does not help.

I actually ran into a very similar problem some time ago. If I remember correctly, the culprit was one of my connected peripherals - either the Honeycomb yoke or X56 throttle (can’t recall exactly which one). Once I unplugged the devices, I was able to log in without issues.

In any case, it’s great that you managed to come up with another workaround to get past the login problem!

I’ve had this happen a few times when I couldn’t get logged into the forum and this worked for me. I opened a browser and went to https://login.live.com/ and logged in, then went to another tab and clicked my bookmark to open the forum and I was able to get in. I would hope that if you did that and then tried to Connect to the Xbox Network that it would function similarly, but I’m not sure.

You are absolutely right! The Honeycomb Alpha Yoke is the problem… When I unplug the Yoke, the Microsoft https://login.live.com/ works fine again  How can it be?
