Unable to start MSFS after latest Win11 22H2 update KB5026446

That’s really interesting - I have an Asus F15 laptop and I’ve had sound problems with MSFS too. When the update was installed I also got CTDs at startup. After I saw this discussion I backed the update out. I sort of solved the sound problems by buying earplugs - but I have to have the earplugs active before MSFS starts otherwise no sound. I hope the update is fixed before it’s on general release.

Audio as the cause from Windows updates? Well that piqued my interest.

I have a pro audio sound card that irregularly is distorted until I unplug and reconnect on startup. Support have been good but have no idea. When I had issues with it a month ago, MSFS gave me problems, but both the soundcard and MSFS are good at the moment.

Not exactly correlated, but interesting. A reinstall of MSFS sorted my issues last time.

I’m still confused on why some are having issues and others not.

I am the same
A “warning” dialog appears and you have the option of “run in safe mode” or “run in normal mode”, but no matter which one you choose, it will end and the desktop screen will be displayed.
I consulted with Microsoft support and asked for remote support, but it was useless.
After all, it returned to normal operation by recovering the files saved by AOMEI backup.
After that, when Windows update was executed, it became malfunction again.
After that, I saw an article on the net saying that the “KB5026446” patch caused various problems such as not being able to update the application.
After uninstalling the “KB5026446” patch from the Windows update history, it returned to normal operation.
Even today, there is information to introduce the “KB5026446” patch from Windowsupdate. Clicking X.

Hi all.
Further update and in my case a solution to the problem.

Having thought about a possible audio issue with the Win 11 update I checked for new drivers for my long in the tooth Asus Xonar DX soundcard and discovered that the latest Asus drivers are from 2015 and only for Win 10. Have been using them for years with no problems but thought some more up to date Win 11 drivers might help.

So I uninstalled the Asus soundcard and activated the motherboards built in Realtek audio with the latest MSI drivers for Win !!.

Reinstalled the Win 11 update KB5026446, started MSFS and hey presto, it started no problems right through to a flight with no CTD’s.

So it could be the problem lies with old audio drivers not compatible with the latest Win update which has a few audio updates in it???

Removing Update KB5026446 had no effect for me. MSFS still displays option to start in Normal or Safe Mode then does a CTD.

But does it actually work in safe mode?

Do you have any information on how to remove the update? The links I have found were not helpful.

if windows 11
control panel → windowsupdate → update history
At the bottom is “Uninstall updates”.
I don’t have Windows 10, so I don’t know.

Rolling back my Realtek Audio Driver (new one installed 3/1/2023) had no effect on my instance of MSFS doing a CTD after displaying choice of Normal or Safe Mode during Startup

Does the sim start in “safe” mode?

It does not start in Safe Mode. It does a CTD

Fixed by updating MSFS thru Steam and then reloading Add On DLC.

Even though I have Automatic Updates enabled in MSFS, I was able to see a Mandatory Update to the Standard Edition of MSFS by navigating to Steam>Library, Left Click on MSFS, Properties>Updates.

Next time I have problems, I will check Steam to see if an update is available.

Thank you for your help
