Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed) - V3RNIO+ TPM

Although this error is happening to me on my V3RNIO+ TPM, seems like this issue happens with different USB devices. The device worked fine for a couple of months since I first got it, then one night I decided to:

  • Install vJoy and AuthentiKit to get better control of my Bravo trim wheel
  • Install the latest windows 11 update, 12-2023

Every since then, the TPM is an “Unknown USB device”. I have tried…

  • Moving to a restore point before vJoy / AuthentiKit and the Windows update
  • Uninstalling vJoy / AuthentiKit
  • Different Ports - USB 2 and USB 3
  • Powered USB Hubs, 2 different ones
  • Rebooting (obviously)
  • New cable
  • Cleaning contacts with an air can
  • Contacting Virtual Fly (they haven’t responded)
  • Looking for a driver for the V3RNIO+
  • Unplugging devices and doing a power reset of the computer
  • Reinstalling VF Hub to see if maybe it installed some drivers in the background

Unless this $1000 TPM decided to burn up at the exact second I made a couple of software changes, which seems unlikely, seems like their has to be a software explanation - but I’m at a total loss as to what it could be.

Any ideas or insights would be greatly appreciated!

In case anyone is following this, quick update:

Virtual Fly contacted me and had me remove the cover, disconnect 3 sensor cables and retest. Windows still wouldn’t recognize the device. Apparently this is a known issue and the remedy is to ship the customer a new version of the USB card and have the customer follow an 18 page long replacement procedure which requires a 2.5mm allen wrench, an M3 socket, star screw driver and some tweezers.

Since I’m sure they’ll be shipping the new USB board from Spain, I guess I’ll have plenty of time to pick up any of the tools I don’t have on hand. Really bad customer experience to spend $1,000 on a TPM, have it break after 20 hours of use, find out that it is a known issue, have to wait on international shipping for the new part and then have to do the repair myself. Just wow - I don’t care how good their gear is, I won’t be doing business again with a company that operates this way.
