Hi,
No graphic issues at all before the new update with DLSS, I was running everything on ultra at 3440x1440 and getting great, smooth frames.
However, since installing the newest SU with DLSS and DX12, I have issues with stuttering causes FPS drops and input delays, going from 40fps to 6fps and causing aircraft to lose control; Also getting subtle ghosting in instrument displays as if motion blur is being wrongly applied, and general subtle screen flickering.
Monitor - AOC AGON CU34G3S - 3440x1440 - capable of 165Hz with FreeSync premium
Asus RTX 3090
i9-12900KS
32gb 5600mhz RAM
MSFS 1.29.28
Nvidia driver 526.98 (latest)
I’ll be honest, I don’t understand gsync/vsync. I’ve googled it, read reddit threads, read threads on here, there’s lots of people saying contradictory advice on how to set it up, arguing with each other in the comments and leaving me none the wiser.
I’ve forced my monitor to 60hz in windows, I’ve turned vsync off in the nvidia control panel and in game, I’ve tried the force half frame rate thing, it’s still happening.
Can someone please tell me what do to here? Please consider me an idiot and give me the idiots guide on what refresh rate to set my monitor at, and how to configure both the nvidia control panel and the in game settings. How do I get this game running smoothly as it was before the update?
Many, many, many thanks.
Can’t give you answers to all your issues but a few things to consider…
DLSS is giving everyone ghosting and bluriness, to the glass cockpit instruments in particular.
Nothing you can do about it apart from not using DLSS, which with your fairly high spec PC you shouldn’t need it anyway. You will be much better off using TAA for anti aliasing.
The devs mentioned the DLSS problem in a previous Q&A and were looking into the possibility of some sort of masking so that the instruments weren’t using DLSS. There is no certainty that this is possible or when it might be implemented if at all.
If you want to persevere with DLSS then it might improve things a bit if you change the DLSS Super resolution setting from Auto to Quality but this won’t make the ghosting and bluriness go completely.
Try DX11 and see if the flickering goes away.
As for G-Sync I can’t be of much help. I have a Freesync monitor which is supposed to be gysnc compatible but I could never get any satifactory results with it.
Obvioulsy I can’t predict what sort of FPS you will be able to maintain with your setup but as even high end systems are struggling to get 60fps in all areas it might be worth trying something a little lower.
My system manages to keep a fairly consistent 40fps so I have limited it to 40 by setting my display refresh rate to 120Hz and using the ingame Vsync option (vsync off in NVCPL) at 33% which gives me the 40fps. This gives me very smooth and consistent performance.
So try somehting like that with Gsync off for now to see how it looks.
I realise you might be expecting a bit more from your high end system but as an experiment it might be worth trying those suggestions and then seeing if you can improve from there and maybe dial in your Gsync.
So basically I’d try DLSS at quality (but TAA will probably be your answer there).
Aim for something like 40 fps by using Vsync as I suggested.
If you think your system can handle 60 fps then you could just leave your display at 60Hz and set Vsync in game to 100% or set Display to 120Hz and Vsync to 50%.
Try DX11 rather than DX12 (remember DX12 is still in beta phase so might not work as you’d hope). I get flickering textures in some 3rd party planes with DX12, DX11 is fine for me.
Thanks for taking the time to write that detailed answer. I’ll try all your suggestions out and report back.
EDIT - Black monitor solved by installing AOC G-menu software, selecting 120hz (making screen go black) then forced restart while screen remains black, system reboots and now displays in 120hz @ 3440x1440. Will crack on with trying the suggested settings out now.
Ok, new problem. I was trying to select 120hz as per your 40fps solution. I can select 165hz or 60hz, but any of the intermediate settings just make my monitor go black until it reverts to the previous setting after 10 seconds?
DP cable.
Ok so I’ve set the monitor to 120hz @ 3440x1440.
In NVCPL -
VSYNC is OFF in the global settings
“Enable GSync compatible” is ON.
In MSFS -
Selected DX11
Selected TAA for AA instead of DLSS
Selected Vsync ON and 33%
I was still getting bad stutters (as in 1+ second long) until turning Nvidia Reflex Low Latency OFF - that has helped enormously. Still some stuttering when moving the camera too fast but previously it more or less CTD on approach it was stuttering so badly, dropping to 4/5fps before changing the settings, so many thanks for that.
At ORY in the Fenix A320, I’m now getting a smooth consistent 40-60fps
Unfortunately still getting flickering. Even having minimised MSFS, other programs like Firefox are now experiencing it. HDR on/off in the monitor software control panel doesn’t fix it.
The game actually seems playable now though so many thanks for your help, the flickering is very annoying but at least the game is no longer grinding to a halt. Does anyone have any ideas about how to sort the flickering issue?
Flickering solved by setting this OFF in NVCPL.
Many thanks @XTCQuinn for your help!
Glad you managed to improve your experience.
I think the flickering with some Freesync monitors happens when your game fps drops below a certain level.
Think mine was below 48fps. As my system can’t run at this level I switched it off and am happy with the results I’m now getting.
Also if you have an HDR monitor I’d recommend using it.
I see you have SDR 8bit.
You can set HDR on in game and set it to 10 bit in the NVCPL.
Well worth the effort if you get it dialled in correctly.
I use the Nvidia freestyle filters to tweak the image.
