Excellent! When microsoft stop supporting win 10 this autumn, I will hop across to win 11.
Gives me a bit more breathing space to save up for a planned PC upgrade first, then a new headset later.
Very good news indeed.
Had to figure after all the other stuff he’s come up with if there was somebody out there that would find a way around this it’d prolly be him! Thanks Matt!
I figured what would kill it is either I’d be forced to go to Win11 or my cable would die. Bought a spare a long time ago just in case. Looks like I might get more miles out of the G2 than I thought! This is awesome!
It’s a pity that it will only work with NVIDIA GPUs
My day has just been made!
Wou, great, and funny video haha.
And the most important, I have not to pay 10€ still for the Xbox politics, for to change the nick a second time hahaha
This will work with the MSFSs MS Store versions, right?
It’s being reported that a VR user has created a driver that allows Reverb G2 to work with Windows 11 24H2.
You may know that those of us who have a G2 were eventually going to see them become paperweights when Microsoft deprecated WMR. When I heard that news I immediately hoped that someone would come up with a driver that would obviate the need for WMR.
Looks like the dream is becoming (virtual) reality.
It remains to be seen whether it truly works as intended.
Note that the new driver will only work with nVidia cards.
Not just any ‘VR user’, but @mbucchia himself, the developer of OpenXR Toolkit. It is in safe hands.
Wow! Didn’t he always state, that this won’t be possible. Hope its not a very cruel joke… But otherwise this is really great news!
I remember hearing the same thing: "Sorry G2 users, you guys are SOL when Microsoft deprecates WMR. There’s nothing that will replace it.
It’s pretty awesome to think that @mbucchia has made this a personal crusade to save a dated, yet still viable VR headset from the grave.
A very good and generous developer, that’s for sure. Just try to remember that OpenXR Toolkit has been unsupported for ~1.5 years. No big deal because I’m pretty sure that this WMR mod will only work with Steam’s OpenXR runtime anyway.
I’m happy for those with Reverb G2 headsets. It hopefully will extend the time you can use these (and other WMR headsets). However, since no WMR headsets are supported anymore it will be next to impossible to get spares, like cables and controllers. So, maybe it will extend the useful life of these headsets, but maybe not for much longer imho.
I mean, they do shoot lame horses don’t they? Just kidding, lol!
Has just been released.
It works, and makes the headset functional again.
Hi,
Yep, my headset is happy now too!
Instructions and documentation here:
Just another short feedback with my G2 and Oasis driver (updated after I had disabled power-saving mode on my notebook)
Installation on Win11 23H2 worked as described on pages linked above.
Initially had black stripes from top left to bottom right on left eye only, but the FAQ has a solution for this which worked for me. So this is solved.
In FS2024 when not in VR mode, the application now behaves much better than described here, that is, it is usable with just some performance penalty. Obviously there’s not the overhead of rendering the cliff house when the headset is plugged on but not in use.
Switching to VR mode I’d say the performance is roughly on par with native VR, meaning that performance wise it is usable for my notebook with GeForce 3070 mobile and slight constraints in rendering quality.
However, the G2 headset shows artifacts, similar to the artifacts that an enabled “reprojection mode” can cause (but this setting is off): The background seemingly moves in areas close to foreground objects whenever I move or rotate my head and when standing on ground and looking around the scenery (e.g.) trees jitter to an extend that makes me “motion sick” although I don’t normally have issues with that. I did not observe similar effects with equal settings and the native WMR driver.
Also tested it with Skybox VR (on Steam) and could play a 3D film fluently without visual artefacts. (The same was not possible though when the notebook was in power saving mode, whereas with the native WMR it would still work with that limited performance).
Uninstallation also seemed to work.
These are my first impressions. For now I’ll switch back to the Windows driver as long as I can.
Still, this project is promising and others with stronger GPUs may have better results than me in FS2024.
Based on your other thread, your PC has obvious performance issues, so I would start working those out….
Correct. After reading you message for the third time it stuck me. Perhaps … and yes, indeed, the notebook was in power-saving mode, for weeks since my last train ride.
I never had noticed until now when I tried VR once more. Will update my above post with changes when I do a re-test.
Thanks for this nudge in the right direction.
