Updated weather is awesome?

The weather now is great but it kills my performance.

Heavy drops of 30% for every cloud flythrough. From 27 fps down to 18 fps. Behind the clouds fps rise immediately back to 27.

Is that in VR? At 4K ultra I get around 41-45fps at FL with a 3080/9700K

Yup today flying from EGLL to LEBL, climbing over the channel looked incredible and the best I’ve seen in the sim

Right after the update, I didn’t see huge improvements in clouds. Seemed like minor changes overall.

But after flying a lot through the weekend, I started seeing a wider variety of cloud types, and best of all, no more harsh, jarring transitions when METAR weather kicks in.

I still think this is a step backwards from what we had pre-SU7 in terms of more accurate cloud types, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

Still seeing cumulus clouds where there should be overcast.

Need a better algorithm to blend clouds coming from the metar-driven weather with those from the meteoblue-driven weather – it’s plainly obvious right now when there’s a conflict between the two. Still needs lots of tweaking, but in any case this is the most “playable” the live weather has ever been IMHO, and they’re making clear progress.

Sort of hard to gauge what the real opinion is here when so many people like to point out single instances of the live weather not matching real life, and don’t try to see the forest for the trees.

Yes, with ambitious settings :sunglasses:.

All is getting better but cloud density is still way off as are having a much more realistic variety of cloud morphology. From looking at P3D’s implementation I’ll take a guess this is way harder to get right than it may appear. I hope they really focus on these areas going forward there is a lot of room for major improvement in cloud depiction. I continue to read references to major improvement coming from Asobo so let’s hope that is not just a false net rumor.

No significant cloud, erm…

Yup. Like I said, it’s a huge step backwards from pre-SU7, although an improvement over the nothing but cumulus clouds everywhere and at ground level we got with SU7. It’s still not great, but at least a step in the right direction for now.

It’s going to be Cumulus or nothing for quite some time. They said they’re going to address it some day (new cloud types), but I wouldn’t expect any new cloud types until second half 2022 at the earliest, maybe Christmas.

@FlyingsCool5650

But it never used to be such a mess as this is now after SU7.

All in the name of “realism”.

Really odd, I recall testing during the beta in NZWN and it was something like 30kts gusting to 50kts or something ridiculous (actually quite normal here) and the gusts were definitely there at 1000ft AGL. I was monitoring it on Littlenavmap. The gusts to subside in magnitude as you get closer to the ground though.

Well yeah, people complained constantly that they couldn’t fly on Vatsim etc. because the live weather didn’t match the METAR conditions. Asobo didn’t do this on a whim it was driven by community request. They started injecting wind and temps initially but are now trying to blend clouds as well.

Just give it some time, I expect what we’re seeing is still phase 1 of what they have planned.

What does blend even mean? How to blend clear sky with overcast? Shouldn’t blend mean no transissions needed? Why is blending needed? To me blend means put things together and then blend them and get a random output. A random output i feel will not be a more accurate weather. Isn’t it real hard to blend clear sky with overcast?

Here is an example

Lets say this is the meteoblue overcast weather in the sim.

Then they need to blend in this METAR into that weather to fit globally without knowing how the weather looks like because METAR does not say how the weather looks like more than that it’s clear.

I think it feels hard to do without noticing the weather is manipulated or changed. That does not fit into a prediction because prediction is to much different than what a static METAR report is. Meteoblue is like a movie and METAR is like a picture. How can we blend a picture together with a movie without make it noticable? Maybe make the picture transparent but then it’s no point blend in that picture in the movie.

Awesome really it is.

CAVOK (no clouds below 5000ft), oh apart from the absolutely massive hideous ones that look awful and are clearly incorrect.

I don’t know and neither do you. The only ones who truly understand what’s involved are Asobo and Meteoblue, so give them a chance to tweak it.

We have no choice. If i could choose i would choose to have the old weather system until they is done tweaking.
