Updating my internet connection?

Hi guys, what is your opinion or experience: I am currently using a stable 100Mbit fiber optic line. Would an increase in performance (loading time, graphic) with a faster Internet connection in MSFS be realistic? (Update to 250 or 500 MBit fiber optic)?. I’m just thinking about the performance of the MS Acure servers, which may be… make an update pointless). Thanks

During updates I’ve found that download speeds vary from 3Mb/s to 250Mb/s on my 1Gb fiber connection (which is actually limited by my 300Mb/s WiFi connection.)

I’ve only experienced a few disconnect events during flight which were quickly resolved.

Do we want better performance from the Azure servers? Absolutely.
Does it make sense to use the highest speed internet connection you can afford? I think so.

Another factor is whether you intend to invest in FS2024, which reportedly will shift much of the terrain file loads from disk to Cloud.

100 is a bit slow indeed so an increase would be fine. However don´t get too obsessed with it unless you need it for other things or you have several people/devices using network at the same time and they all need a high network usage. The increase may also give you a better ping (depending on your provider) which helps in many multiplayer games as well.

Game only uses full network potential during initial flight loading or when installing content. Once you are flying it typically uses less speed to achieve smaller and periodic updates (something ridiculous like 10-20 Mb without PG for instance). In any case server connection speed is clearly throttled by game servers nowadays as you can see multiple posts where people reports slow speeds. In the past you could see how it held max speed during basically the whole content installation process.

I have 1Gb fiber and it´s never used. Even with a VPN during content installation I have faced the 3 Mb issue reported by many people. Online services fail and they are well known to fail periodically, so it´s not your network. Yesterday we had an outtage for instance, which was reported on the forum.

Cheers

I have one 1GB fiber with Verizon And see 3-250 gb on downloads typically depending on what time of day it might be. Keep in mind its not only the Azure servers that might be overloaded orand throttled but also internet routers and the number of hops depending on other internet traffic to get to a Azure server. I do not use wifi for MSFS but 1 gb ethernet solely in the house for PC’s. Wifi is for tablets qnd phone only.

Should you update? I would depending on the number of users in your house.

Thanks guys for your quick response.

@TinJungle791349
There no more users in my house. MSFS PC connected via LAN to the router, and my smartphone. That’s all.

Got a good offer: Actually I pay around 30€ for 100Mbit. Costs for the 500MBit connection around 45€.

While 100Mbps fiber would be sufficient for one user for MSFS it does look like a good deal. Just be careful because if the new ISP throttles their connections then you might have worse than what you have now!

That’s what I see too. I nearly always have the performance tab of task manager open on my 2nd monitor, as I’m always curious to see what is going on behind the scenes. I’ve only once seen the sim download data at ~ 50 Mbps while flying - usually it is periodic at between 10-30 Mbps, so upgrading your bandwidth will, IMO, currently not help in this respect.

If I was in your situation, I’d ask myself:

  • How often do I expect to have to re-install the sim over my internet connection?
  • How often will I download really large 3rd-party or community add-ons that could potentially benefit from the greater bandwidth & save me time?
  • How quickly does the Welcome page appear after starting MSFS? See this post to compare your times with other community members.
  • How frequently have I hit my 100 Mbps limit in MSFS, and has that significantly impacted my gaming experience?
  • Have Windows updates or updates or new-app downloads from the MS Store every prevented me from doing something else for a significant amount of time, and if so, how frequently?
  • Does the new price offered by my internet provider lock me into a contract for a minimum time?

Based on your responses to my questions above, then you need to decide if the potential benefits are worth 15€ /month (180€ p.a.) .

Unless your experience with MSFS is really being impacted because you are seeing the sim consistently maxing out your current 100 Mbps limit, I’d suggest waiting until the internet requirements for 2024 are announced.

Hey, thanks for your detailed feedback.
My Sim works fine, takes around 1 min to start. I do not download large add-ons regulary. And if so…I have time. Am patient  . Primarily, I was hoping for a faster download time for photogrammetry data.
I will monitoring the internet connection workload during the sim usage. Good hint.
If necessary: And I’m happy to invest the additional costs in this wonderful hobby. My heirs should look for a job and earn money themselves

Thanks four your thoughts.

Okay guys. New insights: Monitored the last 3 hours using MSFS in different locations/planes: I never reached my 100 Mbit online download marker through this time. Checked in realtime on my internet router: No internet update until MSFS 2024.

A lot of fuss about nothing. Yet again. BUT thanks for this kind conversation here!

Here in the UK I’ve only ever had 150Mbs since day one with the sim and its been fine. Paying extra for crazy fast fibre broadband, specifically for the sim, has always seemed a bit of a waste of money to me since you’re at the mercy of servers. And as we all know they’ve been pretty slow of late.

FS2024 may change things but we’ll just need to wait and see how that plays out.
