Upgrade Garmin G3X to NXi Standards

The Portrait Format is probably part of the problem - it’s the only G3X Touch stock plane that isn’t a landscape format screen. I used to fly the heck out of the Pipistrel at the beginning, but yeah, it’s due for any sort of update.

It’s not really that we hate it, just that we’re only modeling the 10.6" Landscape version of the G3X. It was simply impossible to also do the portrait version.

Even though they both are sold as a G3X, the portrait layout and UX is almost entirely different than the landscape version, and would have been an extra few thousand dev hours to build on top of the already 10+ thousand in the landscape version and just way outside available dev time. So as opposed to doing half versions of both, we opted to focus on the most popular format for installs.

Reading between the lines on the WT Discord has become a favorite past-time.

Look for key words like “not currently planned”, “nothing to announce on that”, “no updates to share”

I hope so too! I love the Vans planes so much I’m still flying them even though their avionics basically don’t work. Will be amazing once they do.

The manual for the RV-10 says “The SWS RV-10 uses the default G3X displays contained in Microsoft Flight Simulator”. Does anyone know whether this could mean that it’ll sort of “auto replace” what’s in there once SU15 is released? Or does SWS still have to do some work to integrate it? I’ve been having problems with the G3X ever since the WT 430 and 530 came out and hope this update will finally put them both on the same page (and hope they figure out how to get everything to talk to the autopilot, as well).

Excited!

Some conjecture: It depends on whether the EIS customizations will properly carry over into the new G3X. This is code built from the ground up. If it’s not 100 percent compatible, SWS will need to learn the new code and rebuild their customizations.

Edited: Matt confirmed there will be no Bridge version of the G3X Touch due to the various configurations possible from the base code.

So, KingAir350i ?

“For the King, nothing!” - to paraphrase a line from Dune.

I fly mostly the Black Square Velocity XL. What are the odds it will just work with the new G3X once SU15 comes out, or will every aircraft that uses it require a patch? I’m sure Nick is busy with new aircraft so updating the old Velocity may not be a high priority.

The KA will not be getting updated. The G3X in real life doesn’t support aircraft like the KA and we would have to add fake features and capabilities to the G3X to make it work. It just didn’t make sense to spend developer time on that, and make the unit less realistic in the process.

All aircraft will need to be updated by developers to use the new G3X. The unit, as in real life, is extremely customizable at install and as such requires developers to at a very minimum make a number of install options choices in their panel.xml so the G3X can work properly with their aircraft.

For the same reasons, we will also not be offering a Marketplace package to force the old G3X to the new G3X.

In addition, third party external navigator units like the GTNs will need to be updated in order to support the new MSFS Avionics Framework nav, flight plan, and autopilot features required to communicate properly with the new G3X. The G3X, on its own, is a VFR-only device, and cannot load any procedures (it will only load the FAF to MAP segment of published approaches, and no SIDS/STARS, again, just as IRL). It is only IFR capable when used with a compatible external navigator.

We will be making the sim GNS430W/GNS530W compatible with SU15.

The 350i in RL IIRC originally shipped with Proline 21 avionics, of which there is already a simulation in the base game, in the CJ4. While I have no idea how CJ4-specific that implementation is versus the avionics framework for Garmin etc, presumably it would be possible to put a Proline 21 into the King Air with far less work than bodging the G3X to match the KA feature set? Some re-modelling of the interior would have to be done of course. That would seem like a more worthwhile upgrade to me. The current 350i, from what I can tell, uses Proline Fusion which would be a whole new avionics set and unless some third party wants to use the framework to build that, I guess it’s not going to happen.

What bothers me here is that idea that there will be some stock aircraft in the game stuck with the old G3X simulation essentially forever, unless something else is done or they are retired from the game. 3rd parties have the responsibility to update their aircraft and if they don’t, we can vote with our feet (and business), but Asobo and Microsoft we cannot really influence.

The decision was made during the stream’s announcement. No need for hope.

I don’t know that I would say less work. It’s a full cockpit remodel (we don’t have artists at WT so that decision would be above us). Then, you have all the avionics changes: unfortunately the PL series is notorious for having a ton of differences per install. Completely different PFD layout, lots of FMS page differences, totally different active/fail needle and data color schemes, dissimilar ways of accessing display menus, all new set of CAS messages and simulations, new EIS, etc.

It would be no small job, that’s for sure.

Not to get Off Topic, but Husk’s Mod showed the viability of putting the G1000 in the King Air, he even did some minor art modifications. It’s a valid STC in the Real World. Uplifting the King Air that way would be a lot quicker.

I won’t be participating in the beta, but I can absolutely, unequivocally say that I love this development. I absolutely can’t wait until it goes live. Thank you for sharing this remarkable leap forward!

This new G3X is awesome. So much to discover in here! Looks quite well featured, I’ve only had a little play with it in the xcub, I’ll need to jump into a plane which also has the GNS to test it out fully, when I get time.

A wishlist item we asked for and they’ve delivered, how about that! :+1::+1::+1:

Can’t wait to get this in some of the planes I like to fly, Vans, Kitfox, etc.

Thanks for the shot. That looks night, and day different.

Is that rudder, and aileron trim combined on to one axis? I’m confused by the vertical axis above it, which other than its current position I would have guessed was elevator trim, but I can see a “45” at the bottom of it.

The horizontal axes have A and R on them for aileron and rudder. The vertical has “F” for flaps.

Upper Triangle part shows Aileron Trim, and Lower Triangle part Rudder, it depends on the aircraft and how you configure the controls I guess.
The Vertical Axis above is a Flap Indicator, hence the 45 for full flaps

The concept of the G3X is almost like a Universal Panel for GA and Experimental, so its meant to have all of the parameters possible.
