Upgrade GPU AMD or Nvidia

Hi all,

I plan to upgrade my GPU, which been using Nvidia for many many years. Should I give a try for Rx7800XT from AMD? Is AMD Radeon is good to run MSFS? Please help to provide your experinces .. Thanks

6800xt with no issues. I find the drivers a bit less problematic than nvidia but that can change anytime.
Pick your two favorites and go by price and/or availability?

6900xt with no issue but nvidia is a lot better for FS

6750XT and it is excellent. I haven’t used Nvidia for a long time and quit them because of fairly regular driver issues. I have now had 3 AMD (MSI) GPU upgrades and only once have I had a driver problem, which was simply resolved by rolling back and waiting for the next update, which arrived very quickly so clearly the problem was identified and sorted.

Radeon RX6900xt … running smooth and cool on a 5K Monitor. Got it used, way cheeper than I could find a used nVidia. Perform just above a RTX3070 and lower than RTX3080. Good “Bang for bucks”.

I own the rx6800 and rtx4070. For flight sims hands down the Nvidia card performs better. Anything outside simming or RT they perform the same. My RX6800 was a disaster in xplane but that’s just one game.

Also the implementation of FG on Nvidia side is much better ATM. I don’t fly without it. Nvidia rules on the PC market and their technological implementations just tend to be better than AMD.

You need to be more specific. A lot depends on your CPU, if this is the starting point. What is your target resolution? Multi-screen? Would 30 fps be sufficient? Do you want a balanced cpu - gpu combination or do you plan to upgrade the cpu in the future as well? Do you only fly general aviation aircraft or airliners as well? What about add-ons that might be taxing on the VRAM? Is Ultra a necissity or can you live with high settings or below?

My target specs as below:

  • 1440 resolution
  • Single screen
  • Target FPS >50
  • My CPU 5600X - Plan upgrade to 5800X3D
  • Setting to High

I switched to AMD recently. I did so originally just to try something different than Nvidia, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the results. I’m running a 6600 XT with a mild OC, and a 5800x3d and have a similar performance to what you’re looking for. 1440p single screen, easily over 50fps in light areas but around 45fps in busy airports with some FSLTL traffic, settings a mix of mid to high. The 5800x3d is a great cpu, but can struggle a bit in busy areas unless you keep traffic under control or are ok with the lower frame rates.

I plan to stick with AMD, possibly upgrading to the 7900xtx to bump up to my monitor’s native 4k. I have no desire for upscaling or frame generation/artifacts, and don’t have any ray tracing or other Nvidia specific needs, so I’ll happily save my money with the AMD options.

Best GPU you can afford and then find a matching CPU.
For example a 4080 + 7800x3d is beautiful.
The cpu needs to NOT choke the GPU but it cannot improve performance.
Balance is what counts.
In Europe this means that incl display you end up at €2.600 easy.

Have you by any chance tried AMD’s fluid motion preview driver with your 6600XT? I also had no desire for frame generation but when I tried it with my 7900xtx I’ve been having second thoughts. It works best for normal frame rates starting at about 50fps and you are right there (and would reach well over 50fps with a new 7900xtx). You will definitely need to go 4k and HDR10 with that gpu. You won’t regret it!

The 5800x3d is still one of the very best for MSFS. I feed a RTX 3080 in 4k on ultra settings with it and I think it could handle even a little more. I think you should aim for a gpu at least in the category of an RX 6800 xt , RTX 3080 , RX 7800 xt, or rtx 4070 . ( The 10 GB Vram of my rtx 3080 are still good enough for me at the 4k resolution. ). I tried AMD fluid motion (the driver level generic frame generation) and it looks very promising even on a rx 6600 non-xt. I own an rx 6750 xt as well and think of it as a very capable minimum for your settings (when used with FSR2), the rx 6700 xt is almost as strong but much more energy efficient. You ryzen 5600x would work well in conjunction with an rx 6700 xt @ 1440p and also with an rtx 4060 (when using frame generation for this card, but many will object to the 8 gb Vram of it (I don’t), but this category of gpu only make sense if you do not plan to upgrade to a 5800x3d. My personal favourite would be the rx 7800 xt.

No I haven’t tried it. I may if and when it becomes available on the main release driver, but my monitor is only 60Hz refresh. There’s little to be gained even if I like it.

Hi all,

Today I purchased & Installed MSI RTX 4060Ti 12GB (OC version) to my PC. With turn on Frame generation and the setting set in a mix of high & ultra, I get 90FPS to 120FPS vary by aircraft and airport. I’m very happy with this configuration and thanks for all the help and advice!

Just a update.
Last week I upgraded my CPU from a i7-6700K to a i9-14900K.
but I did not change my (old) AMD RX6900xt (24 GB).but i gained at least 30FPS overall, some scenarios even boosted over 50FPS.
So don’t underestimate the power of a fast CPU, to deliver frames to your GPU.

In your case, your old I6700K was a mismatch with your 6900xt so there was a lot of potential performance gain with a more powerful cpu. With a slower gpu, the performance gain with a new cpu wound have been lower, if any at all. Using the fps window in developer mode will show if you are cpu or gpu limited which is a really good tool to utilize before making any upgrades.

Good to see you got a nice performance bump with the sim! :+1: :+1:
