Upgrade GPU analysis paralysis for both sims

Hello everyone,

So, a few months ago I started to renew little by little, my Ryzen 7 1800x went into retirement at the bottom of its box, replaced by a Ryzen 7 5800X3D.
Then I changed RAM by going to 32 GB of RAM. Switched to SSD only.
Then the power supply which is 750w.
(then as my screen ended up breaking down after 10 years, I had to buy a new one, then I changed the case, anyway..)

But there is only one element that I have never changed: my Gigabyte GTX 1070 Ti. It is still a little efficient using Lossless Scaling (on FS 2020 only, it is horrible on 2024. I also saw no difference using FSR).
And I have to say that it’s time for me to change it, otherwise I feel like it’s going to break because I see things that worry me (artifacts, video driver crash, even on ETS 2 I started to feel big problems…)

As I mainly play with airliners (Fenix first, PMDG, I plan to buy the ifly…) with a lot of addons and payware scenes, in 1080p.
Which GPU should I have to last several years on FS 2020 & 2024, once my addons are compatible?

I tend to go with NVIDIA with Frame Generation, but which one?
I have the impression that most games released in recent years use a lot more VRAM, so I’m not really keen on going with a 4060 or Ti 8 GB, especially if I want to last several years.

  • So 4070 Super, how does FS 2024 handle the 12 GB of VRAM? Given the reviews I’ve seen, it’s not great because it seems to be saturated so quickly.
  • 4070 TI Super, these 16 GB reassure me, but I have the impression that it will already be overkill in 1080p
  • refurb 4080 non-super for the same price as 4070 Ti Super, even more overkill in 1080p?!

I don’t think my little GTX will last the next few months, even less while waiting for the 5000 series…

TLDR : RTX 4070S, RTX 4070TiS or refurb RTX 4080 for an Ryzen 7 5800x3d, 32 GB RAM in 1080p for flying Fenix & other stuff like that ?

AHHHH why I overthinking it

I would also plan on a new PSU as well. 750W won’t really hack it for any 4xxx series card and won’t have the 16 pin 12VHPWR port those cards need (Unless there’s some sort of adapter, but 750W would still concern me). Nvidia specs 850W minimum but I’d say 1000W. I just got a 1300W for my new build.

Also what motherboard do you have? These cards are all PCIE 4 (or is it 5?) 16x cards. You won’t get the performance you could get out of them w/o PCIE 16x support on your MB.

The new 5080 and 5090 GeForce cards might come out early next year and the older ones should become cheaper. I would currently go with a 4080 or 4070 Super, as much VRAM as possible.

Side note, I find it interesting that you report Lossless Scaling is a mess with 2024. I have the same experience, it works great with 2020 but I find it unusable with 2024 (4080).

Hi thanks for the answer,

Just checked my PSU is less than 1 year, it also had the new 16 pin cable, and according to NVIDIA website, a minimum of 700W is recommended for the 70s series, and 750 for the 80s. So I don’t think I need to reupgrade it…

About the motherboard, I may change it, but after the GPU because I really feel like it going to give up in the next few weeks.

I got a 4070ti 12GB VRAM last November with a new PC purchase, and would definitely not go the 12GB route anymore even though it worked pretty well in MSFS 2020 (the Super’s weren’t out yet unfortunately)

The 4070TI Super looks like the best choice, especially with the 16GB of VRAM. A refurbished 4080 could be good but you’d be taking a chance on a refurbished item. The 4070TI Super should also draw less power than the 4080 would.

Playing in 1080p I’m guessing you have a high refresh rate monitor and you’re not playing at 60fps?

Aim for a GPU that will last because eventually it won’t be overkill anymore. For instance, if later on you upgrade your monitor and decide you want to play at a higher refresh rate and higher resolution.

Yeah for some reason, don’t know why Lossless Scaling is terrible in 2024. That said, I haven’t tested it on the 1.1.10 update yet.

I note that I need to get as much VRAM as possible, so I guess that would lead me to a 4070 Ti Super. The 4070S “only” has 12 Gb

Your mileage may vary but it appears to be manufacturer dependent on what PSU they spec for their card, especially in the 4090 range. I wouldn’t expect something less than they spec to be supported and might have issues, may or may not affect your decisions. Just something to keep in mind.

I agree with others on the lower ram boards, look at the list of reports of 8 and 12 gig cards overrunning VRAM and performing horribly. Even if they do improve garbage collection and tweak some stuff, you’ll have to turn settings down even with a 4xxx series card and low VRAM.

Good luck on your build!

Oh I didn’t understand that you were talking about the RTX 4090, which is even very powerful but much too out of my means and out of stock ,
that’s why I think I’m going to go for a 4070 Ti Super. I’ll take a look at the prices in the coming weeks (hoping they’ll drop)

I have a 4070Ti Super and an i7 14700, it has no issues with my 750W PSU. the recommended PSU for a 4070Ti super is a 700W PSU

Are there people who have an AMD equivalent to the RTX 4070 TI Super? From what I read, it would rather be the RX 7800 XT, could someone give me some feedback?
Looking for prices in the stores in my country, there is still a difference of 300 euros  :skull:
