Upgrade, how worth is it really

So been pondering an upgrade, having just got back into VR flying
Currently have an i5 12600kf, 3080, 32gb ddr4

Using a quest 3 its pretty darn good, but to keep it smooth in all areas I am having to use low-med settings, dlss no supersampling
Feel like its on the verge of being great if i could throw some more grunt at it

Pc is getting pretty old since first bought so feel a new PC is on the cards, case, power supply etc
Plus doesnt seem that much more to buy a whole pc vs new cpu/gpu only!

Had a prebuilt 7800x3d, 4080 super in my cart for a couple of days, almost caved in many times

But is it really a significant worthwhile upgrade, or still in the diminishing returns territory, lot of cash for not that much gain?

Id⁷ want a decent boost spending 2k+ !

What baffles me most is the 7800x3d is highly regarded here it seems but benchmarks seem to have not that much between my 12600kf and the 7800x3d, like 6% better!

I’d suggest upgrading to a 5000series card.
Get a RTX5080 and 9800x3d.

From what ive read, 5000 series arent likely to offer much over a 4000 equivilant for a cpu heavy game

One thing I can tell about the x3d CPUs is that their performance is highly workload dependent.

If you check average difference across benchmarks, you may see small uplifts. But from what I hear and experienced, it’s really shines in msfs 2020, probably not as much in 2024.

In games where frequency is more important than memory latency and bandwidth, x3d chips don’t do as well. But in msfs if you crank up the lod settings, traffic settings and use a complex addon it becomes very cpu limited and in my personal experience, the x3d chips comes to their own.

But that’s just me. Ymmv.

Except multi frame gen may be. If you have a high refresh rate monitor, msfs may be the best showcase of multi framegen. But I am not too keen on it. And you say you are using vr. And afaik, vr doesn’t benefit from framegen.

I concur, will be interesting to see the first official benchmarks.

It’s an interesting discussion, so much hype about MFG and i’m trying to wrap my head around how it’ll all come together considering the additional overhead of VRAM required. Possibly the higher bandwidth of GDDR7 in combination with better texture compression will play a major role…

My opinions are a little old school in that there is no such thing as a free frame without sacrificing something else.

What I hear from public sources is that they switched to a newer model which is supposed to reduce vram usage. But by how much, no idea. So at the end it may not be that helpful if they are vram limited. But if it’s 70ti / 80 / 90 class, vram limit should be lesser concern.

Folded and bought the PC
So be able to see for myself tomorrow!

Hmmm ok. Initally very disappointed!!
Fired up 2020, same settings as previous and it seems no better! Slightly worst even for stutters

Further investigations required but a little concerned right now!

Panic over
Using Dx12 has made all the difference, ultra settings and all smooth flying over london
Sweet
2024 may run well for me now!
