Upgrade Report: 10900K to 5800X3D

Hello there,

In the next few days I’ll be upgrading my system to a Ryzen 5800X3D and I thought I’d document the performance increase here in case anyone is considering a similar upgrade.

I’ve ran some basic tests at various airports and I’ll be providing the FPS results below, both for my current system and the upgraded one.

Test setup:

Windows 11 21H2
Nvidia drivers 517.48
MSFS Premium Deluxe (Steam) with SU10 and all WU installed

All tests were run with the default Traffic settings (AI Traffic type OFF but Ground Aircraft Density at the default of 50). Online functionality / Bing / Photogrammetry ON

Graphics settings were either the default HIGH or ULTRA graphics preset, using DX11 and TAA. On my current system DX12 is 1-2 fps worse than DX11 and DLSS has no impact.

Screen resolution is 3440x1440. If you’re running 1920x1080 you should get 1-2 fps more max, at least that’s what I get now with me being Main thread limited.

All tests were run using noon local time and default scattered cloud weather preset. No addons were used other than the specific ones mentioned below.

I simply loaded the flight with the aircraft ready for takeoff, using the default cockpit view looking ahead and waited about a minute for the FPS to stabilize. All airports were Asobo airports unless specified otherwise.

Current system:

i9-10900k with an RTX3080 (10gb VRAM) and 2x16GB DDR4-3200mhz

Test results with default A320neo:

		    High	  Ultra
KJFK 31L	55        44
KSFO 1L  	56        44
RJTT 34L	58	      50
EHAM 06	    57  	  46
YSSY 16R	55        48
KLAX 7L	    56        45

Orbx EGLC 27 with London City Landmarks --> High 66, Ultra 54
Origami Studios EGKK 26R --> High 60, Ultra 47
iniScene EGLL 09R --> High 50, Ultra 41

Test results with Fenix A320 (Display quality Balanced / Renders on CPU / Version 1.0.3.128)

		    High	  Ultra
KJFK 31L	42        34
KSFO 1L	    42	      36
RJTT 34L	45	      38
EHAM 06	    45	      36
YSSY 16R	43 	      36
KLAX 7L	    43        36

Orbx EGLC 27 with London City Landmarks --> High 53, Ultra 44
Origami Studios EGKK 26R --> High 49, Ultra 40
iniScene EGLL 09R --> High 39, Ultra 32

My goal is to be able to run the Fenix at iniScene EGLL at a minimum of 45 fps locked, at least on HIGH but hopefully on ULTRA, with headroom for a reasonable amount of AI traffic. We’ll find out together if that’s possible :sweat_smile:

Edited with results below:

I’ve received the new CPU and motherboard and did a clean Windows and MSFS install. I re-ran the same tests I did above, using the same settings and scenarios and the results are truly impressive.

Test results with default A320neo:

		    High	Ultra
KJFK 31L	80	    62
KSFO 1L		85	    63
RJTT 34L	84	    65
EHAM 06		86	    63
YSSY 16R	85	    66
KLAX 7L		86	    64

Orbx EGLC 27 with London City Landmarks --> High 82 , Ultra 60
Origami Studios EGKK 26R --> High 83, Ultra 64
iniScene EGLL 09R --> High 78, Ultra 57

Test Results with Fenix (Display quality Balanced / Renders on CPU / Version 1.0.3.128)

	        High	Ultra
KJFK 31L	61	    47
KSFO 1L		61	    48
RJTT 34L	64 	    52
EHAM 06		60	    47
YSSY 16R	65	    53
KLAX 7L		58 	    47

Orbx EGLC 27 with London City Landmarks --> High 70, Ultra 55
Origami Studios EGKK 26R --> High 66, Ultra 52
iniScene EGLL 09R --> High 56, Ultra 45

During testing I noticed that I was now getting better performance rendering the Fenix avionics on the GPU instead of the CPU, so I ran a separate round of tests with that scenario.

		    High	Ultra
KJFK 31L	64 	    49

iniScene EGLL 09R --> High 60, Ultra 47

Needless to say I’m quite happy with the results. Getting about 50% to 30% better performance depending on settings is incredible. Is it a wise investment of money now that AM5 and Zen4 is here and the new 7800X3D will come out eventually? Not really. Does it provide an amazing boost right now? Hell yeah.

With these numbers I’m really looking forward to seeing what the new version of the 5800X3D will be able to do, should be insane.

I’ve now settled on settings that are a mix of High / Ultra and give me a locked 45 fps no matter the situation / weather / airport, with a good amount of AI and parked planed using FSLTL traffic. This was my goal and it’s been achieved.

If you’d like me to test something in particular for you, let me know in the thread.

Cheers!

I am planning the same upgrade. Keep us posted :wink:

Keep in mind that server performance on any given day or at any given hour will add some uncertainty into your numbers.

I got a dollar says you see virtually no change at all. If you get a 10% performance boost you could knock me over with a feather. What’s the theory behind the upgrade?

I’m going with 17%!

The 5800X3D is a beast according to some benchmarks thanks to its V cache. It can push 20+ fps more than a 12900K can specifically in MSFS.

If you want the best CPU for MSFS, it’s the 5800X3D.

Waiting to hear how much more fps it can give you with the Fenix A320.

Keep us posted.

Feel free to let us know what is the cost of the upgrade, cpu, mobo, ram etc.

Just to get a feeling for the frames per credit ratio.

I am also curious if your 10900k is running stock clocks or if he feels some spurs when needed.

No chance. But we’ll see.

I’m interested in how your upgrade results go, as I have a similar system and have been drooling over the 5800X3D’s potential in MSFS.

You don’t happen to have a VR headset to run some benchmarks on do you, as I fly mainly in VR and am wondering what impact the 5800X3D would have with my generally GPU bound MSFS VR experience?

Sorry mate, I don’t have a VR headset, pancake mode only for me :slight_smile:

But when I get the results you could temporarily switch your settings to the same as me and do some quick and dirty comparisons that way.

If entirely GPU bound using VR, then the 5800X3D wouldn’t do much as performance is controlled by the GPU in this scenario.

I figured that, but there are some complex scenarios where CPU speed makes a difference (I can toggle turbo on/off with a hot key, so can switch quickly between 3.6GHz and 4.8GHz), but it usually only makes a couple of FPS difference. I’m keen to see how the 4080 benches in real life in MSFS, not those DLSS 3.0, which apparently doesn’t work in VR anyway, marketing videos out there now.

I’d try studio driver aswell personally it’s running better for me with my 5800x3d and not running 22H2 yet either.

I’ll try some quick comparisons with / without Studio drivers and 22H2, gonna clean install Windows anyway.

Well I just finished swapping the motherboard and CPU and to my surprise Windows booted fine and didn’t complain too much so I ran a couple quick tests after installing the AMD chipset drivers.

So far I’m impressed and the FPS increase is in line with what I was hoping for.

At High settings at KJFK 31L, in the Fenix, I went from 42 to 57 FPS and at Ultra from 34 to 44 FPS. Same test conditions as mentioned in my first post.

At iniScene EGLL 09R, FPS went from 39 to 55 at High and from 32 to 42 at Ultra. So far I’m happy, looks like I’ll reach my goal of running 45 FPS locked with good amount of traffic.

I’ll spend some time doing a clean Windows / MSFS install this weekend and run the full set of tests I ran with my old system. I’ll update the first post when done.

BTW if anyone reading this also runs XP12 from time to time, the performance increase there is much less. In the Toliss A321 at JFK, maxed out settings, I’m only getting 35 FPS up from 30, and using Render / Objects at high I’m getting 42 FPS up from 36.

Cheers

Thanks. Xp12 performance is a disaster atm. Much worse than xp11. They have to improve for final release. In VR I have for decent settings with readable cockpit between 15 and 20 fps
Msfs here with i5-8600k and AMD 6900xt in ultra around 30 fps in the pmdg 736. Msfs is much more multi threaded in the meantime

I’ve updated the first post with the results of my upgrade, pretty amazing. I’ll also be upgrading my memory from DDR4-3200 to DDR4-3600 in the next couple days, I’ll run some tests and post the results if they’re worth mentioning.

Why? Have you done this yourself, if so give us your results please.

Anyone know if the DLSS 3.0 no VR support is permanent?
