Upgraded from hdmi 2.0 to 2.1…night/day difference!

I recently purchased a hdmi 2.1 tcl on clearance as my Roku tcl was starting to have all kinds of issues…namely not recognizing my wi-Fi and black screens on my Series X. I was just thinking about giving up on msfs because of the stuttering and lag, when I started up the game on my new tv all the stuttering and visual issues had mostly disappeared! Im confused…Is msfs optimized for 2.1 only?

Moved from MSFS 2024 to Tech Talk as this is not about the upcoming sim.

Hello @TeamHammy7,

All Xbox Series X consoles include an HDMI 2.1 cable in the box, and either this or another certified 2.1 cable is what we recommend using. It’s not that MSFS is optimized for 2.1 cables but rather this is a limitation of the HDMI tech itself. Per the HDMI 2.1 spec, this class of cable supports 48 Gbps of bandwidth (compared to 18 Gbps for HDMI 2.0). While you probably won’t notice any difference using a 2.0 cable if you’re playing at 1080p resolution, you’ll definitely need the bandwidth of a 2.1 cable if you’re outputting at 4k resolution.

Thanks,
MSFS Team

From Xbox Support:

The Xbox Series X console comes with a 2-metre Ultra High Speed HDMI cable that supports HDMI 2.1 features. This cable is required to support 4K gaming at 120Hz. Using a different HDMI cable may impact your video quality. Make sure to place your console within 2 metres of your TV so that this cable will reach.

If you require a longer cable, make sure to purchase a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.

Good to know - all my cables are ancient. I’ll take a look at Best Buy this weekend and see what they have.

That’s a good idea as Best Buy is where I purchased my tv from. The VRR, hdmi 2.1 or a combination of both has extremely improved my gaming experience! Not just msfs, but many other games as well
