Since upgrading my PC I decided to try DX12 with my Quest 2 again and I can confirm that it runs extremely well with most of my settings now on Ultra and High, Clouds on Ultra which I could never get smooth FPS with before. With DX11 I could only run most settings on Low and Medium and only Clear Weather. I am using ODT and OpenXR Toolkit again with CAS sharpening and Turbo Mode ON as this is giving me a solid 36FPS and about 15% headroom at the worst and 30-40% most of the time and that’s in PG areas. After some extensive testing I think DX12 is stable enough on my system. Also it the first time I’ve been able to make use of FSR 2 which is not available with DX11.
EDIT - Now using DLSS - QUALITY with Better results than FSR 2.
Thanks for sharing all your settings mate. It’s always interesting to see what others are using.
I just recently went back to using DX12 and with the latest msfs and nvidia driver updates it seems a lot more stable now so I’ll probably stick with it for a while. With my QPro/rtx4090/Link performance seems about the same. Maybe a tiny bit smoother and a bit better distance clarity, but both could be a placebo thing, lol!
I didn’t know anything about AMD FSR 2.0 being available with DX12 so I was interested in trying this out. My 1st impressions is that dlss/quality is a little smoother with a little less ghosting when I do fast yaw (rudder/tail) turns. So, back to dlss/quality for now. Still, it was well worth trying and depending on your PC setup, it may work well. Thanks for your info/update mate and best cheers.
My Quest 2 has 256GB of memory. Its Oculus but I thought Meta and Oculus were the same? Correct me if I’m wrong lol. I’m not sure if the 256GB of memory would make a difference as I only ever have about 28GB or less free. Got too many music Videos and other stuff saved on it
No problem mate. Think I’m going to update to the latest Nvidia driver and test it out as I’m still on 556.12 and hopefully I’ll see a bit more stability and better performance. I found using DLSS/QUALITY on DX11 really good but compared with AMD FSR 2.0 on DX12 its much better for me. Much more performance headroom with a bit less distance clarity but I do a lot of GA flying never above 4000ft AGL and cockpit clarity is absolutely perfect. I think you’re right about PC setup though, everyone’s is different and the smallest thing like the brand of RAM etc could make the slightest difference. All the best to you mate. Happy flying
Thank you for your response. Meta Oculus and Oculus are probably the same but something I saw indicated it might not be, so I thought I should ask. Interesting about the amount of memory.
Yeah I think as long as its not less then 1GB there shouldn’t be any issues. Not sure at all though but I’ve got a feeling that the Sim doesn’t use any of the memory on the Quest 2 but again I could be wrong. Well put it this way it doesn’t use much that’s for sure!
My Quest 2 is quite old though. Was bought when they first came out and given to me by my Wife’s sister who couldn’t use it as it gave her motion sickness
Thought I’d try the latest Nvidia Driver 560.81. Nothing but problems for me so reverted back to 556.12. Not going to change it again till something else breaks it lol
Ya, nvidia updates don’t always work well for some. Also, I’ve found it better to use DDU in safe mode to properly uninstall previous driver beforehand (google on how to do this).
Yeah I agree it’s sometimes hit and miss. I’ve been using DDU in safe mode now for over a year. Ever since I noticed in my task manager there were 6 or more Nvidia Containers running. Did a quick search on the forums here and found the answer straight away. Sometimes (well most of the time) these forums are better then Google
I believe the memory on the quest 2 relates to it’s internal storage for quest games, it shouldn’t affect msfs at all as that is just streamed from your pc
I think I’m going to take the plunge and update to latest version then. Thanks for the link.
Wow that was easy to use. I’ve updated to the latest version. Will test it out now and post my results soon…
Edit.
I’ve just tested and can confirm I see a definite improvement. I’ve now switched from AMD FSR 2 to DLSS QUALITY as it’s now smoother and the image quality is definitely sharper and clearer. Thanks for the tip
I’d never really considered even trying AMD FSR 2 since I have an Nvidia card, but while I lose a few FPS, the artifacting when another plane flies by is far less noticeable. Hmm…
I’ve noticed the exact same thing… but I can live with it lol. I’m now using DLSS Quality instead of AMD FSR 2 as I’ve been messing about with my NCP settings and I’ve found that changing the Texture Filtering from High performance to Quality has Improved things that much with the sharpness, clarity and less shimmering in the distance and hasn’t really affected my framerates. I do loose about 3fps at a very busy LEBL - Barcelona with Live Traffic on and Live weather but it doesn’t stutter at all. Might keep trying different settings but for now I think I’ve got it running as good as I can on my PC setup without making any hardware changes (yet lol) so I may as well just enjoy it lol till the next update or something breaks it and I have to tinker and tweak all over again
Well, my honeymoon with dx12 is over for now. I started to get some msfs2020 hangs after longish flights yesterday. I went back to dx11 and all’s well again. Also, while HAGS enabled didn’t seem to cause any issues with msfs, it did cause some issues with SteamVR apps, esp. when I tried to close them.
So, HAGS disabled and back to DX11 for now. Game mode also = off, although not really much impact anyway.
At the moment I’m only doing short flights typically 30 - 45min and not having any problems so far. I seem to remember ages ago when I tried DX12 I did encounter freezes after flights that were over an hour. So for now I’ll keep them short and hopefully I’ll be able to stay on DX12 until MSFS2024 comes out in November… counting the days now
