Using external SSD for Microsoft Flight Simulator

So I have MSFS installed on a dedicated 1TB internal ssd drive. And after purchasing the PMDG 737 airliners recently, I finally ran out of disk space installing them. Since it’s installed on a Lenovo Legion 7 gaming laptop, upgrading the storage isn’t a simple job since Lenovo didn’t manufacture the laptop to be easily consumer upgradable. So the easiest option is to use external storage. My laptop has USB 3.2 gen 1 and 2 ports. But is this enough? Would using an external ssd effect the sims performance?
Also could the installation be spread across multiple drives?

I used to fly like that before i got my current setup. didnt notice anything performance wise that accounted to the external SSD. If you use a USB 3.2 gen2 shouldnt be a problem at all.

As to your quastion about splitting: If you use an addon manager like this one you can put your mods on another drive and let the program create symlinks and it would work!

Note that if you want the 3.2 gen 2 10GB performance you need a gen 2 external device and a gen2 cable.

I use a 1TB NVME SSD externally for the program and an ordinary hard disk for the scenery and community directory. This leaves my Windows drive (C:) free.

In use, there’s no slowdown, crashes or other anomalies. The external SSD is USB 3.1 and plenty fast enough.
