i just received the Varjo Aero but its giving a headache being able to set it up. The Varjo base software is installed as well as Steam and Steam VR. I also installed the Viveport for the HTC Vive SteamVR Base Station 2.0.
i want to calibrate my position in SteamVr but i always get the message “Display Connectin Touble”. I have not been able to go further. I dont think there is a problem with the connection since i can see through the lenses while using the Varjo base software.
Additionally, while opening MSFS, and changing to VR i get the message that no device was detected…
i appreciate any support before i end up returning this headset
First I would get any other VR software uninstalled and cleaned out (appdata folders).
I don’t think you need Viveport for the base stations? I could be wrong there. I would think they would work just like the Lighthouse 2.0 base stations.
Clean out your Steam VR install:
Also uninstall Varjo Base.
Check all your appdata folders for any VR remnants and clean them out.
Then do a fresh install of Varjo Base along with fresh install of Steam VR.
hi, thanks for your feedback! i have an rtx 2080ti.
for some reason i end up opening SteamVR if i go first to the Varjo base software, System and then over Steam VR room set up. So this seems to work now.
Now i am receiving a message in MSFS that there is no headset, any idea why is this happening? what setting do i have to have in “OPEN XR Tools for Windows Mixed Reality”?
Yes as NumberNumber said, no OpenXR for Steam VR developer tools. You need to get rid of any and all of your WMR software and any other VR software you might have. Varjo base and a very clean install of Steam VR ( as I described earlier) are all that is needed and all you want to have on your PC. Give that nice new Aero room to breath baby!
As I only use Open XR for MSFS 2020 I leaved it enabled along with Open VR in the Varjo Base software. You still need Steam VR though for the tracking of the Aero.
I’m using the AERO together with Valve lighthouses without the need of SteamVR. Also OpenVR in Varjo Base disabled. Everything is running perfectly. In case of using controllers however, you will need SteamVR. I’ve not tried this out yet in MSFS.
No - Varjo Base needs Steam VR for tracking purposes. Open XR will handle the displays for MSFS 2020, but not the tracking. Steam VR is required for tracking. You can easily see it is running in task manager.
I checked again with my present setup: i.e Varjo AERO, 3 Valve lighthouses, Varjo Base with OpenXR enabled and OpenVR disabled, NO CONTROLLERS (as I stated before).
I definitely can confirm that SteamVR is NOT active (and not necesary). FS20 is working perfectly in this setup.
Well your working magic then, cause it always runs in background with my Aero as per their support page as well - which states Varjo Aero utilizes Steam VR tracking with up to four base stations.
Directly from their support site:
Available tracking methods
Varjo headsets support the following tracking methods:
SteamVR™ Tracking uses up to four SteamVR™ base stations to track your headset and optional controllers. SteamVR™ Tracking is available for all Varjo headsets.
Varjo inside-out tracking (Beta) uses the built-in cameras on your headset to scan the room and keep track of your position. Varjo inside-out tracking (Beta) is available for XR-3.
So in a nutshell, if you got tracking in the Aero you got Steam VR running. It may not be obvious to you, but it is running. Yes Open XR is taking care of the displays in MSFS 2020, but Steam VR does the tracking.
I agree. To check, I temporarly removed the SteamVR folder and after starting Varjo Base I got an error that SteamVR could not be started. So SteamVR is indeed needed for tracking but it runs in the background.
