Video card temperature (4K/ Ultra settings)

Hello!

I need your opinions and experiences. I have an EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 ULTR video card. I use the simulator in 4k resolution with ultra settings. The temperature of the video card is 75-85 C. Is this temperature normal? What is the temperature of your video card in 4K resolution with ultra settings?

Hi @hhelikopter4891. Note that I moved your poist here to the #self-service:pc-hardware category.

Those are toasty up around 85 C, but not at the limit… yet. What kind of cooling solution do you have for your case? Also, remember that ambient temperature in the room where your PC is located contributes to the overall temperature. Lower the room temp and the corresponding GPU temps lower as well (all else remaining the same).

85 is close to yhe limit, but it will throttle before the limit is reached. In the summer you might struggle a bit without additional cooling

I run my system with the sides off of the case which brings the temps down by a few degrees. You might want to try that.

My EVGA RTX 3080 10GB generally runs at just over 80°C in MSFS at 4K Ultra with no issues. EVGA’s website specifies the maximum temperature for both the 3080 and the 3080 Ti as 93°C: see HERE I am certainly not worried about my temps but to each his own. FWIW the only CTD’s I have ever had was due to the known Capture One bug.

And further info: EVGA frequency boost specs:

This shows:
Base video clock @ 1.44GHz
Boost video clock: 1.71GHz

Screen capture of HWInfo on my system:

This shows the current GPU temperature 82.8°C
Current video frequency: 1.635GHz
Max video frequency: 1.725
Fans running at 72%

So basically EVGA design is OK with fans running quite some way behind their maximum (only 72%) while being at 72% of maximum boost frequency over base frequency. Note that in absolute terms this is at almost 96% of maximum video frequency. I am OK with that, given how absolutely stable my system is.

I would not be concerned with GPU core temperature until 85 to 90c. By default, the 3000s cards will throttle up frequency until 85c. In other words, if below 85c, the card will bump up voltage and core frequency as part of its boosting behavior. Normally it’ll hit the power limit ceiling before getting to 85c. If you open GPUZ while gaming, you can see the reason for the performance cap (temp, power, etc.).

Consider Undervolting. On my 3080 max temp 70 degrees
1945 MHz
Very smooth running Msfs at ultra settings

Just as info, my Asus RTX 3070 got to 212F/100C which of course got my attention. I had a few BSODs which Windows attributed to hardware, so I removed the glass from the case temporarily and got the temp down to “just” high, but knew that wasn’t a good solution. I ended up sending it in to Asus for service and got a replacement.

Sort of related - I have a Cyberpower PC and the CPU was overheating too (I have a poorly-designed case). I contacted a tech who told me to reapply the thermal paste. I asked him if that would void the warranty, and he told me that it was actually the user’s responsibility to reapply it. I honestly didn’t think I’d ever need to do it. I ended up doing it, and both components are fine now. Best of luck to you.

My 3080 @ 1935MHz/0.9V runs at 62C max at 100% load in MSFS. Even without the undervolt it runs at 67C max.
