Virtual Desktop "native" OpenXR support is here!

Using the phone was the key. VD updated. VR working fine. Only need to find out why it doesn’t play nice withOpenXR toolkit.
Thanks again.

This fixed it for me.
Thanks!

Thanks! This does indeed seem to prevent the CTD. OpenXR Toolkit seems to be working, but the menu won’t render now. I can change the settings using the hotkeys though, by counting the button presses

Anyone else seeing this? @Suburbannun?

See known issue at top message.

Seems to have resolved my CTD, many thanks :+1:

Aah, that was probably the issue. I’ll bear that in mind for the future.
Thank you.

Whilst the idea of bypassing steam VR seems like a good one. I have to say that even with steam VR I’m finding my resolution look and feel much better with steam VR in the background? I don’t know why but there seems to be something that keeps it looking fresh and smoother. I’ve tried all the settings already it could just be me but that’s my view.

Is this a compatible version of the OpenXR implementation to include compatibility with existing tools, i.e. OculusTrayTool and OculusDesktopTool? Thank you for your work on this as my I7-11700, 3080, 32gb is loving the beta.

Thank you mbucchia for you amazing work!

II use my Quest 3 in combination with VDXR and OpenXR-Toolkit and I am very happy so far. For details see this post: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/quest-3-and-msfs-please-make-reports-here/612274/66?u=ebidevil

IMHO you don’t need these tools anymore if you are using VDXR and OpenXR Toolkit. See my post above.

Has anyone else noticed that MSFS in Steam VR runtime looks significantly sharper than either VDXR or Oculus runtimes, even at the equivalent resolution?

I’ve been struggling with the native Steam VR experience through Virtual Desktop because it was very jittery and made me nauseous. So I resorted to Air Link, and the experience was buttery smooth, but very pixelated.

This VDXR seemed like a god-send, and it is absolutely smoother than Steam VR, but it comes at the cost of looking “smudgy”. It almost looks like the resolution is downgraded and then smoothed with anti-aliasing. When I do an “apples-to-apples” comparison (VDXR to Steam VR) with all else being equal (including resolution) Steam VR looks like putting on prescription glasses.

Running 5600x CPU, rx6800 GPU, 32GB ram, windows 11, MSFS 2020 Steam edition, Quest 3, all drivers up to date.

It did look smudgy this morning when I tried it, but when I restarted Virtual Desktop Streamer, that fixed it. My problem with it is that after about 1.5 hrs the sound gets staticy. Eventually the frames get stuttery - but only in the cockpit, outside the plane the problem goes away. Once it starts, it takes a MSFS restart to fix it though… Using Steam VR doesn’t give me this problem.

I have a quest 3 and have set up Vd And using the new vdxr runtime. I have opened steam vr and disabled the runtime there to stop ctd. However I still have a few issues.
Firstly open XR no longer opens when in the headset.

Second, the ‘ready to fly’ box on msfs disappears and doesn’t exist for vr or non vr so you can’t start a flight.

Thirdly, sometimes the mouse doesn’t show in msfs, just the quest controllers. The mouse is sort of stuck on the computers desktop. Any ideas on these issues?

I have been experiencing CTD’s and Quest 3 VD just plain locking up the headset (display freezing)

I have removed OpenXR completely and reverted VD to 1.29.0 on headset and PC streamer, so effectively back to Steam VR and setup prior to reading this thread. This has not solved the Issue !!

I now get a headset freeze a few seconds into flight. Pretty fed up at the moment and have precious little idea what to do next tbh.

well VDXR works very very well… and that boost in FPS is huge. ON the quest 3 I am using Godlike setting and dancing as I fly… just beautiful. Night time doesnt look as good outside with clouds than day time. But hey, its dark who cares!

yes same here, quality and smoothness is excellent, amazing little headset.

It would seem that somehow, Occulus VR, which runs in the background all the time i assume, had itself set as the OpenXR runtime, whilst Steam also was set as the OpenXR runtime and may have been the cause of the freezing, when switching to VR. All seems OK now but would love someone to confirm for me if I was right in my assumptions.

Now I have returned to a vanilla Steam VR setup, it feels as if graphics/wobbling effect are worse and would now like to return to VDXR (having just removed all trace of it) but am reluctant to get back into it all as it seemed to be the start of my problems.

I’ve found VDXR works exceedingly well on my medium spec system with Pico 4. It is important, however, to ensure Steam doesn’t get in on the act by going into the Steam VR settings and ensuring OpenXR is the selected system - just follow the advice posted by the dev either here on on the Discord channel.

@mbucchia Thank you for your awesome work. One simple question, ¿Is this metod working with the standalone MSFS version of the MS Store?, I have Quest 2 and MSFS MS Store version.
