Vive Pro 1, an oldie, but still a goodie!

My +3.5yo wired Vive Pro 1 (amoled screens, etsy lens mod, 2x 2.0 base stations, and Index controllers) is still pretty hard to beat with msfs imho. Especially since I recently upgraded my PC to i9 13900k water cooled, rtx4090, z790mb w/wifi6e, 32Gb 5200ram, and 1000w psu. One big advantage of my VP1 is that it is Native SteamVR, like the Index, so I don’t need to use Vive Console like newer Vive headsets, or WMR, Pico, Aero, Meta, and Pimax headsets need to do with additional software.

I’m able to super sample most games to +300% visuals and these look fantastic. Especially darkish games. SDE is still a little more than I’d like but not too bad. Also, thanks to my high end PC I’m able to use Ultra setting for just about everything (I still leave clouds at high with msfs though).

With msfs the secret I’ve found is to increase its % visuals to 350% and then use DLSS/Quality. I’ve found that increasing the % visuals greatly improves msfs visuals with DLSS. This is because I think that native SteamVR rear projection works much better than msfs rear projection works with non-native SteamVR headsets. Using the SteamVR in-headset graphs I’ve been able to optimize the % visuals and still get at least 45fps rear projected (motion smoothing and advanced super sample filtering both disabled btw).

I don’t currently see any advantages in using OpenXR Toolkit like I used to use with my older i9 9900k/rtx3090 PC btw.

The net result is fantastic, esp. night flying with areas like NYC with marketplace enhanced lighting addons. I also have a Quest Pro and while local dimming has helped, it’s still not as good imho.

I’m sure that Index users may also see many of these benefits, albeit they will not get the advantage of the VP1’s amoled screens. I am using thin VP1 face pads and the FOV looks very good. Also, the Audio with windows enhanced bass sounds very good, to me at least.

Anyway, I thought it may be useful to post my findings. If someone can come out with a native SteamVR headset with micro-oled, high res, high fov, and good audio, I’m all ears, lol! Maybe sometime in the future, who knows?

Hello
I have also the vive pro 1 and did not been convinced by other headset. i even bought a HP REVERB but the LCD panel in the night was not for me ! I like fluidity in flightsim and for the moment the vive pro is the best for me !

Ya, much as I love my Quest Pro for it’s clarity and virtualy no SDE, it’s pretty hard to beat those VP1 AMOLED screens, esp. at night. Hard to believe that the VP1 has been out for 5 years now and, unlike many other headsets out at that time, it’s still relevant.

I really hope that Vive finally gets it right and comes out with a VP3 with high res micro-oled screens in the near future. Fingers and toes crossed.

The Bigscreen Beyond looks interesting but it’s not for me. The small form factor is great but I don’t like that you need a customized facial interface that isn’t glasses friendly, non-adjustable IPD, and no proper on ear audio. Maybe 3rd party mods will come out later to at least address the facial interface, audio, and maybe Bigscreen will at least provide software IPD adjustability.

I am looking also at the bigscreen for me (sim) two problem: first one it will be impossible to have a little look outside the headset (I need it to write clearance, look at my physicall FMC). The other one is the resolution, it is big and I am really not sur that MSFS2020 will not struggle with the PMDG737, we need eyetracking for this ! moreover there is no wireless (like the vive pro !)
I am looking forward maybe the next valve headset after the index (the deckard if it exist !), we will see . But I seems that we are going to an other screen generation (micro oled) and lenses (pancake, already here). So I hope that in one year or more I will find the sucessory for my vive pro !
