VNAV How do I enable?

I am wondering, how do I enable the Vnav on the A320 neo? I know the 787 has a button for it in the A/P control panel. It would make long flights a lot easier.

Set your target altitude and press the knob while having the cursor showing up arrow to engage managed climb mode.

It will auto update with the points?

It won’t fly beyond the constraint altitudes, press CSTR to find out.

If you set your altitude to the cruising altitude after take off, it will stop at the altitude constraint on the next waypoint. Once that waypoint passes, the aircraft will continue to climb up to the next waypoint’s altitude constraint. And it keeps going until it reached the cruising altitude.

Same goes for the descent. Change the altitude to your lower target altitude and press the knob again to engage managed descent. It will level off at the altitude constraint of the waypoint, before continuing the descent on its own after it passes the waypoint.

Your ATC will keep calling you to expedite though, since the aircraft will try to follow the waypoint altitude instead of what the ATC gives you.

Thank you, so this means I need to calculate my rate of descent. My old sim had VNav so I haven’t had to do the equations in awhile.

That’s up to you, really… I never really calculate my own rate of descent. The descent rate is calculated automatically by the aircraft based on the Cost Index (which I always set to 100), Block Fuel, and ZFW/ZFWCG. So it automatically gives you a managed descent airspeed which also corresponds to the descent rate.

All I have is a table that corresponds between my cruising altitude and how far in nm I am from the runway to tell me when I need to start my descent. Which is practically a table of TOD depending on my cruising altitude. As soon as I hit my target altitude and press the knob for managed descent. I always reach my ILS intercept altitude at the right time every time. I don’t really need to calculate anything. But that’s just me.

Keep my thrust lever at CL mode (around 85-89%) on A/THR mode on, and the aircraft manages the thrust accordingly to descend at that optimal airspeed and descent rate.

Thank you guys so much, I’ll try it out when I get home.

Everyone has so far given you a good explanation of how the Altitude mode and FLC mode work on the AP, but VNAV is a whole different system. My understanding is that currently VNAV is not modelled in MSFS. The only option right now is to manually calculate step climbs and descent points. Eventually I am sure VNAV will be implemented on 3rd party offerings.

One thing I have noticed, is when I set my altimeter on autopilot to the ILS approach altitude and I’m at a cruise altitude let’s say $35,000 ft, if I engage the up arrow on the altitude knob it will start descending when the up arrow is pushed. When I look at the fmc there are 2 more waypoints that I need to get to with 35000 still, so why is it always wanting to decent before the TOD point?

It seems to have a mind of its own. Just half an hour ago I landed at Nantes in France, ILS Y 03, via NEDAN. The constraints were 7000, 4500, and 3000. On getting sent down to 7000, I just set it to 3000 and every time ATC stepped me down I was already doing it.

Does it work for XBOX A320Neo?

I don’t know, sorry… I don’t have XBOX.
