Brief description of the issue: During flight, on change of throttle setting or directional input, aircraft enters into severe rotational oscillation/gyration. Oscillation involves rotation similar to an out of control top. Oscillation around vertical axis begins violently, settles into a stable extreme maneuver, and then ends abruptly into stable serene flight. During bug expression stick control is non-existent although power settings can affect altitude gain/loss.
Provide Screenshot(s)/video(s) of the issue encountered: TODO
Detail steps to reproduce the issue encountered: Fly the Volocopter in Live Weather mode with wind.
PC specs and/or peripheral set up of relevant:
AMD Ryzen9
AMD gpu - ancient
Logitech Thrustmaster 16000 HOTAS
Build Version # when you first started experiencing this issue: SU7
Further Details & Speculation:
It seems as if the algorithm that balances the engine rpm can enter into an undamped feedback loop. Possible causes could be wind gusts confusing the algo, VRS on descent - if modeled, or precision errors leading to brittle equilibrium states.
Experiential
The bug occurs seemingly at random, beginning violently and ending very abruptly. The system simply “recovers” aggressively to a still hover state.
pc. I am experiencing same situation. No wind. Oscillations/Gyrations happen without any noticable causes. (Dell XPS 8930, Intel Core I7 9700, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060)
I have had no problem with oscillations or gyrations although I don’t use any joystick. I think this aircraft (and others) are unstable. Try using very small, slow changes when flying. Try flying using the throttle only. Increase the throttle for vertical liftoff. Very slowly decrease the throttle to land smoothly. There shouldn’t be any movement except up or down.
@PacificSet90456 - Interesting that not using peripherals prevents the issue for you. Could be a rounding error in the FMS brought on by analog inputs? Maybe I’ll give kbd a whirl on this bird.
For the sake of argument, after the first gyroscopic oscillation incident, I did indeed revert to incredibly slow inputs. Did not help. Tried fast inputs, did nothing different. Vortex Ring State aside, it really seems like the individual motors are controlled via a FBW FMS, and that there is a quirk where non-zeroing sums are causing a stable gyration that renders the craft uncontrollable until it stops on its own. (Rounding error maybe?) Wild guess on my part, but it’d be the first thing I would check.
Admittedly, I was waiting for the Helicopter / Prop Physics update to try the volocopter again. CFD and the advanced prop model may make this easier for the devs. I hope they revisit it with an improved flight augmentation algorithm supported by the new physics.
I figured out my issue with the oscillations. It was plugging in an additional controller that I guess was not calibrated. Unplugged the controller, and the oscillations went away. I am hoping for better physics too when helicopters are released. Thanks for the answer @FerrusDude
