This thread is intended for VR users to share their performance experiences with different addon payware/freeware. As we know VR is just a different beast of its own aside from 2D performance with addons.
Right now I’m cautious to buy anything that isn’t specifically optimized for VR.
As certain textures and 3d object methods may tax VR more than others.
Looking forward to hear from VR users with previously owned addons.
It would be horrible to go on an addon buying spree now that we have VR only to have our excitement crushed by addons that simply aren’t compatible/optimized for VR performance.
I’ve learned this the hard way with Xplane11 sceneries as that beautiful St Barts/Sint Marteen addon on Xplane Store just didn’t work well with VR (7-15 FPS) no matter what.
soooo the only payware i have is Flightbeam’s KDEN. It runs good i think in VR, i haven’t really tested it outside of ghost town mode (no AI Aircraft parked, very little ground vehicles/personnel), but it also somewhat depends on the plane you are flying. I’d say about 3-5 FPS difference between the 747 and A320, but for the most part it works the last bits of loading in out a few minutes after loading in and improves slightly (another 1-2 FPS) upon reaching cruising. It’s a gradual improvement as you get farther from the airport and begins to be slightly noticeable when you get towards the further runways (18L/R, 34L/R, 8, 25). It’s a very nice Airport and being from Colorado, in VR i felt like i was actually taking a flight out from Runway 8.
For GA/Bush it more depends where you’re flying, your altitude and your ground graphics settings (photogrammetry, hd textures etc). You’ll probably have a “smoother” experience flying around the Outback at 10k feet than you would in the Alaskan Wilderness at 500’. However, that is better than flying around New York City on a friday night in a heavy rainstorm. In general though, they have better performance than the tubeliners.
Settings:
100% Render res
AA: TAA
Mostly Medium, off or low for the rest of the settings
High Cockpit refresh rate
Average FPS (per the in game FPS counter) 18-20. My understanding this is per eye so its like 40. i can maybe get 45 with ASW Off, forced 45fps (Oculus Rift S Headset). it’s not the smoothest experience like you might find in other “AAA” VR games, but it’s certainly playable once you really dial in the settings. I suspect there will be future improvements all around
If you don’t have a VR headset, go for a WMR headset as this game was “optimized” For WMR headsets, however OpenXR allows for SteamVR and Oculus headset as well (this is where i think non-WMR users are getting bottlenecked. i’m probably wrong).
