VR needs solid improvement in clarity in this update, it's time

Since this is not a bug to report I posted here to say to Asobo it’s now time to improve the clarity in VR once and for all. This is getting long in the tooth that update after update VR is grainy looking. The ATC window needs to be fixed as well since it was broken in the last couple of updates. That being said again fix the clarity. This should be priority at this point more than small plane updates, small cloud changes, and some of the other small sim changes we always see present but not mentioned. I put this right up there with the ATC/AI engine needing to be redone. This would seem an easier target than the coding changes needed to fully fix AI and ATC. It’s shameful other titles like DCS with VR capability are far more clear than this revolutionary sim title. If you have a dedicated VR team what the heck are they doing? Please fix VR’s visuals in this update, it’s long overdue…

This feedback section, its to help with quality control for the code that had already been planned and executed. What you are asking for is a wish. You can’t tied a wish that was never even agrred upon yet, and put it in the beta testing, and start having people vote on that, for the BETA test. You are asking for code you know hasn’t been started. Encouraging people to vote on wish like it was a defect in the beta, thats just wrong…

This thread has nothing to do with the SU10 Beta. Maybe post it in the relevant section so that users that are not in the beta will see it.

With so many last minute changes and unmentioned updates to things we’ve seen in the past it’s not a stretch to let Asobo know we’re getting tired of the visuals that could be cleaned up with a graphic change in the display code to VR. I think of the oversized buildings that were modified and not mentioned in past updates that had to get corrected, the Longitude Dolphine dance, modified night lighting that was a step back that had to be fixed, and the tree/building draw distance cut because users spoke out about a fix and Asobo tried to address it (again Asobo later somewhat fixed it). I’ve gotten used to a fluid situation from Asobo with each Sim/World Update that was never mentioned in the tech notes as official fixes. Heck we just had a USA Update that blindsided us all with many great fixes. So the list and announcements we see is not static and concrete. You may have not been around since the initial release of FS to see this. There’s no excuse for grainy VR when there’s a dedicated team at Asobo working on VR (which is what they’ve said). This team has done nothing since their official existence to improve VR. With each update it seems they’ve regressed VR. I hate to say this but I see no examples where it improved. So again asking for an improvement in clarity and a fix for the menu in VR is not a stretch. I know this time around like before we’re going to see many things modified and broken that didn’t make the official fix list posted, why not have this in the equation as well?

Read my post above, this needs to stay right here as there’s a long history of extra fixes in ‘Sim Updates’ that Asobo never tells us about that we find out pleasantly or the hard way. Why not have a fix for VR as well?

Because the scope of what was going to be tackled for SU10 was months ago. You are bringing this up, you are getting people voting on whether this is a show stopper or not for SU10, but this was work that was NEVER agreed upon to be in SU10, and hasn’t been worked on yet. So now if you get 76 people all voting for this and its not in SU10, people are going to be upset. But that is wrong. Because at the last minute, you are trying to PUT this in SU10, and having people vote that its a show stopper. This whole section is for beta testing what was already AGREED upon was going to be in this release.

VR has been the scope since they added it to the sim. Go search the forums and find people have been requesting fixes going back well before this next update. Asobo knows we want this addressed and like I said they throw in all kinds of updates outside of what’s officially posted. Where’s the VR team??? They’ve been missing in action since that department was launched at Asobo.

There’s nothing wrong with asking yet again they address what’s been promised many updates back. For the record this should have been another focus for this update seeing as this is the 50th+ time people have brought VR issues to the team.

Correct. There is nothing wrong with asking. But not HERE. Because here is where BETA testing is happening, and when issues are found, people vote on whether it is a show stopper. Your requested VR is not in this Beta. They never said they were going to address what you want in this SU. Based upon voting, based upon the priority of what had to be fixed, what was going to be in SU10 was voted and decided upon months ago. You are putting a request in the Beta testing, and having people vote whether Sim Update 10 should be held up and not released because your REQUEST is not in the build. I’m not an XBox user. I was, but in January I switched. XBox is barely functional. WASM support is not there, so many addons cannot go to XBox. IniBuilds A310 which releases for the 40th Anniversary will probably need WASM. So SU10 is pretty desperate in order for the 40th Anniversary to even work on XBox. And here you are, adding new requests in the beta thread, and having people vote on whether SU 10 should be held up until your requested feature is implemented. The place to make this appeal is in General. And its in WIsh List. Get all the VR users to vote on it. When its the most voted thing, guess what, it will probably be tackled for SU11 which would be Anniversary edition. But I’m sorry, you cannot be posting requests, and firing up people to vote on whether this is a show stopper. This whole thread is exclusive to findings of the beta test.

Mods, can you please move this to WishList or whereever is most appropriate for requests. If it can be moved with the votes still attached, that would be good.

It does take a high-end system to get good clarity. I had poor clarity running a RiftS on a Ryzen 3600x and 2070 super system. I upgraded to a 5800x CPU, 6900xt GPU with a ReverbG2. I’m pretty happy with the clarity I’m getting right now but it cost a lot of money to get there.

Here’s a tip. I notice a big difference in clarity depending on which resolution setting I adjust. I leave OpenXR at 100% and adjust the in-game resolution only. This is better than leaving the game at 100% and adjusting OpenXR. I currently run at 100% OpenXR, 75% TAA in-game, and having most game settings on high.

Good luck.

Great post. This doesn’t take away DCS looks 10 times better in VR than FS2020 no matter what you do. Asobo needs to address this once and for all. Go find out what that VR team is doing…

Ok, so alienware R11 with 2060 that is not a powerful PC especially when pairing it with a Reverb G2 in MSFS 2020.

I suggest folks to at least have an RTX 2080 and better for the reverb G2.

What exact settings are you running with the G2? It cant be that high otherwise its going to be a stutter fest. So you are likely having to lower your visual quality to have a flyable experience with MSFS, which is an infinitely more dense and complex world than DCS (looks great, but rather cookie cutter copy and paste environment.

My point is DCS + MSFS VR are the two most demanding VR titles to date. MSFS is even more so as it is newer and you cant expect your VR to look perfect with that hardware. I doubt you are running at native resolution and yes, thats going to make a difference.

Does DCS run? Sure, but they have more years in development and the world isn’t AS complex IMO.

Also, VR was NOT coming to MSFS, it was a select few people that pushed hard on Asobo at the first reveal for us to get VR implementation.

Again, what openxr tool kit settings are your running, whats your render scale set to? You simply can not complain about clarity with hardware that is limiting you.

Also, those Alienware machines are notorious for having terrible circulation, so on top of playing the most demanding VR title, not having proper cooling will instantly throttle your CPU/GPU likely leaving you to have to lower your render scale to end up getting enjoyable long term smooth performance.

Finally, should you have to buy a 12900k + 3090 to enjoy MSFS in VR? No. You shouldnt, but I am currently seeing 75 FPS, 55FPS, and the lowest dip I had today was 30 FPS with the newly released BETA + DLSS set to performance and Open XR toolkit with Fixed foveated rendering on and NIS Scaling.

Also, the only thing more clear than the G2 is the Aero, which I had for 5 months? THAT was true clarity. The G2, looks amazing in its current state, I really think you are being limited by your PC hardware and might not realize it.

I would like to say that Aerofly FS2 in VR outperforms MSFS in 2D. And it does it natively.
It’s not going to please anyone these days (nothing moves, no other planes, cars, people moving). And it’s graphics are simplistic.

But they have a new version coming FS 4. Just something to keep on eye on and see what folks will think of it.

My computer is plenty powerful enough to run FS in VR. Outside of the clarity it’s smooth as silk. If the visuals were cleaned up like DCS there wouldn’t be a problem. I hate to run to the old constantly ‘tweaking’ argument like the old FSX/P3D days. If one thing that FS2020 has shown all of us (even though I knew it all along) is you don’t have to keep doing the hardware upgrade game if the code is right. I know if my VR headset is smooth as silk and looks decent, the graininess can be addressed refining the code on Asobo’s side. Again we need to quite running to ‘you need a better video card or more ram’ argument for every problem. Sometimes the code is at play and like FSX no matter how much your throw at it it will not make a difference if the code isn’t optimized.

Well I see you won, the thread has been moved.
