I had the G2 and went with the Crystal (not the new Light). I also wear glasses, and I found the Crystal to be problematic. I could fit the glasses inside, but they bump into the lenses, destroying both glasses and headset lenses. I tried the prescription inserts, but the glasses were better.
I have the Valve Index now, and I love it. My glasses fit inside no problem, and there is an adjustment for depth to make room.
When I had the Crystal, I was always turning down settings to get good performance. The Index resolution is about where I was setting the Crystal, so now I don’t have to adjust anything.
I went from G2 to Q3 and I am pleased with the change. The Q3’s lenses, being pancake not Fresnel, are much better IMO and give nearly edge to edge clarity rather than the G2’s narrow sweet spot. Sound is not quite as good but is certainly acceptable.
The real star is Meta’s motion reprojection (SSW) which IMO is significantly better than what I could achieve with WMR. Performance without MR is on par with the G2, but because I can now actually use MR I’ve gone from 45-60 FPS unlocked to 40 FPS locked but doubled to 80 Hz, so to me it’s as if I’ve strapped a 5090 into my machine!
I have my Q3 tethered to power and it has it’s own router to connect to via Wifi, so everything is as infinitely powered and smooth as it was with the G2. The only degradation I notice due to signal compression is the edges of clouds can sometimes be a bit pixelated, but the edge to edge clarity more than makes up for that.
I too wear glasses. I had no issue with them fitting inside the G2 and have no issue with the Q3, so all is good!
Thanks for sharing! I will likely go the same way but just want to wait and see how MSFS 2024 affects VR-performance.
Just a clarification, are you saying that it is indeed possible to power it fully? I was under the impression that the best you could get was a slow drain. What method are you using? And if I may ask, which router did you go for?
OK, indefinitely powered might be a bit of an exaggeration. The lowest I’ve seen my Q3 battery drop to powered this way is around 85% after about 3 hours of continuous use, so extrapolating that out I could get 20+ hours continuous use. If I take a 10 minute break after an hour or so, it charges back up to full by the time I start again. So for all practical intents and purposes, I consider it to be indefinitely powered.
Re router, it is just an ISP branded one I got free as a spare. It is WiFi 6 and my PC connects to it via 1000 Mbps Ethernet and it connects to my main router by 1000 Mbps Ethernet. Apparently if have those three connections, you’ll get a great Q3 experience, like I do, regardless of router brand.
I have it connected to a charger. I believe using a motherboard USB port doesn’t give it enough juice and it will discharge over a couple of hours. The charger I use is a spare phone charger but I’d say the charger that comes with the Q3 will do the trick just as well.
And yes I am using VD / VDXR. It works beautifully for MSFS VR and the VD to your PC screen/s is equally as magnificent.
FYI, OLEDs don’t need local dimming as there is no backlighting to dim as each pixel is self-lighting and can be turned off completely for full black already.
But yes, the rest of those specs would be great. The only thing I would add is eye tracking for foveated rendering, but that’s more of a nice to have.
Did u get the 512 gb one or just the 128gb the reason I like idea is meta is not going anywhere any time soon, I dont just pimax not to go same way as g2 and aint they having an event this week about the s might we get a new headset to this week with usb c thats my only gripe.
Have u looked at any off the add on battery packs.
Sorry on the router I have netgear nightawk quite reluctant in giving that up as the wifi is class for the house with it. But is wifi 6 really necessary for the question 3.
I bought the 128GB model as I was only intending using the Q3 for MSFS. It turns out the Q3 is a much more substantial VR package than the G2, so I’ve bought Beat Saber (for the family, I swear! ) and may buy a few other games from the Meta store. Even for that, 128GB is plenty but if you do plan on buying lots from the Meta store then maybe consider the 512GB model.
No, not inside tracking with tracking stations rather the headset tracks your eye movements and that gets translated via software to let a game know specifically where you are looking. It then renders high detail in that immediate direction and reduces detail as it renders further away from it. You don’t actually notice the quality reduction because as soon as you move your eyes towards an area that was lower quality it immediately becomes high quality. The net effect is that you get the same effective visual quality but you also get better performance because not everything in the scene is being rendered in high quality. The PSVR2 has this, but unfortunately it doesn’t work when you use it on PC.
If your existing router is high quality/speed then you can always try that first. However, the recommended hardware setup for the Quest 3 when using VD, which is what I use, is shown below:
