I just built my first PC one month ago to play on Microsoft flight simulator I was on Xbox X before that. I’m wondering if my setup would be good enough to play in VR. I have a CPUAMD Ryzen, seven 5800 X plus a GeForce RTX 4070 TI super and 32 GB of Ram.
Do you think it would be enough for the pimax light Or meta-quest whichever is best?
That’s pretty well the same as my specs and I use the Pimax Crystal Light just fine. However, despite them saying it’s play straight out of the box it’s well worth viewing a few vids and make a few changes for the best performance.

Yes, but is tough. The Pimax gets you better resolution but the Quest’s lenses gets you with edge-to-edge clarity. The Pimax is way better on peak clarity. Comes down to if you want to move your eyes or head. But Pimax wins without question on center clarity.
If I could have the Crystal’s displays with the Quest’s lenses I’d be happy.
That being said, I dumped the Quest 3 and Quest Pro kind of hard. I also hate the Pimax’s complexity.
I don’t know anything about VR yet. I’m not sure I’m getting everything you wrote. You’re saying that the Pimax has a better visual center, so you have to move your head around more. Which cause the edges to be a bit blurry I guess. While the quest has a better edge to edge resolution which means you can just move your eyes, but the whole picture is less sharp. Is my understanding, right?
That’s kind of it.

Pimax is like looking through eyeglasses, where you can have some distortions off center.

The Quest is like looking through an opening into the 3D world.
It’s a tough choice but the Quest 3 would be an easier start and return if you don’t like it. Plus, you can try out the standalone VR apps for some fun on the Quest.
I started with the original Oculus Quest, Quest 2, HP Reverb, Quest Pro, Quest 3, and finally the Pimax Crystal (original). You could see pixels in the original Oculus but it was still super fun and got me hooked.
The downside to the Quest is needing to use a streaming app such as Virtual Desktop. The downside to the Pimax is getting a good fit. Most people need to get a face interface kit and build out a custom fit. I also find the Quest 3 to be very uncomfortable but there are options to improve that as well.
The Pimax is the closest I’ve seen to 2D clarity but that requires pushing it hard with a RTX4090. What turned me off about the Quest 3 was its peak clarity wasn’t as good as the old HP Reverb, which I was trying to replace. Had I jumped to it from the Oculus I would have been blown away.
Whatever you decide, stick to MSFS 2020 for your first try at VR. MSFS 2024 has too many problems to make it your initial jump into VR. It takes a few weeks to tune your VR experience and change all your bindings around to sim in VR.
I read on Pimax website that you can return them easily in 14 days.
Can you elaborate more please what is a face interface and what’s the purpose of it? Is it something that you need to track your head movement accurately?
I had an old redeem code for game pass that I kept for Microsoft flight simulator 2024. So I played it a couple times and don’t get me wrong the game has a lot of potential but for now there is too many bugs so I will stick to 2020 for a while.
Don’t get too uptight about distortions in the Pimax Crystal Light, you really have to look for them and they are far far less than viewing the sim in a 2D flatscreen. Believe me, you won’t notice them.
I wear glasses all the time but my optician made a pair with a reduced prescription designed for computer work which are absolutely fine with the headset and no distortions. As it happens I’ve invested in some custom lenses but they’re really no different.
I’m not sure if the Light has the same design but the original Pimax Crystal has an extremely wide shape to it. It could not rest on my face without flopping to either side. I have a big head too, lol. The movement was so much that I could not get my eyes in the correct viewing spot. It’s a very common issue with the Crystal.
I got a kit similar to this one, Pimax Crystal LIGHT/8K-X Fabric Foam Upgrade Kit Index Gray Tribute Edition | Studioform Creative. It was 100% not usable for me without that kit. I needed to add 3 layers to the sides with some tapering towards the center.
I’ve seen people also doing stuff with facial scans and 3D printing, kind of like how Big Screen customizes theirs.
