Wake turbulence does not seem to work

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:
Taking off in a cessna 172 behind a boeing 747 does not cause mayhem. One would expect the cessna to be struggling. Nothing happens.

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue?

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?

Every time

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. have a friend take off in 747
  2. follow behind in cessna 172
  3. nothing happens

• Yes

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• The Microsoft preview videos showed off wake turbulence but it’s not in the game. I tried flying behind a jetliner taking off in the Savage Norden and there was nothing.

• Yes.

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• I took off with a Cessna 152 right after my friend taking off with heavy aircraft (737 max and others tested), no wake turbulence was observed at all in any of our attempts.

It seems to me that wake turbulence would be tied to any CFD simulation. When I enabled CFD visualization in the sim, I was able to visualize airflow (lift, drag, prop circulation, etc) in several smaller planes. However, neither the 787-10 nor 747-8 showed any CFD activity in my very limited tests, which consisted of simply spawning into an airport and taking off.

It seems like they turned off several things that caused problems in order to be able to release the sim. Same with the wiper system that is clearly documented in the SDK, yet still not activated.

I guess there will be an update that will activate all these missing systems and hopefully fix some of the planes like the Pilatus PC24 which are clearly broken.

For me the helicopter ground cushion effect seems missing or not strong enough too, which might be tied to the CFD or wake turbulence system. Anybody else missing that?

Either that or their Happy Merge Day went wrong. Wouldn’t be the first time they forgot to merge a couple of features back into the main branch.

Do you know how to activate the wake turbulence visualization in the developer mode? Couldn’t find it.

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?
• No

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• I was coming in to land at an airport, and an airliner trampled me as it came in just below me. As it passed my plane I got thrown over on to the right wing, and I had to right myself quickly. So this may not be a binary choice, and the degree to which it is working may be in question, and how this is expressed, but to me wake turbulence is working to some degree at least. It was pretty cool to see as I did not anticipate it was going to happen, but knew immediately what it was when it did. I was in the G1000 172, but I have no idea what the other plane was, other than it being live, not AI, traffic.

• Yes.

•I tested by flying an xcub behind several AI airliners and server multiplayer aircraft. All aircraft didn’t show any signs of wake turbulence working.

Same. No wake turbulence from self or other planes or helicopters.

Y’all are sure you have all the options on that you need for CFD and turbulence etc. to be “Realistic”?

Yes, turbulence is set to realistic. Do you see wake turbulence?

I haven’t tried yet, and I’m at work at the moment. I was just checking. I didn’t see that mentioned in the OP. Maybe I missed it. I’m not denying this is an issue for anyone. That would be the first question I would ask if trying to reproduce the issue.

Let me know if you can reproduce it. Hopefully it’s something i’m doing wrong, meaning it does work. Otherwise we would have to wait months or years for a fix. If any fix is even coming at all…

The key will be in finding a way for Asobo to reliably reproduce the issue. Then I think they’ll fix it quick…

If I were going to test it I would fly something slow into a busy airport like Heathrow. Very easy to get trampled there.

I did some testing with a C172 at KLAX with live traffic. There is definitely wake turbulence on my side. (Also with turbulence on the LOW setting) It’s just not very dramatic though. The aircraft just shakes around a bit. It should be much more aggressive.

Interesting. I had zero with multiplayer on and a 747 taking off in front of me, and turbulence set to realistic.
Also make sure it isn’t just the weather that causes the wiggling.

It was definitely not the weather. Everytime I got behind a landing or departing aircraft the plane shook around. Everytime I turned to the left or right a bit, out of the wake, the wake stops. I do think the wake is a bit too narrow. I haven’t tested it with multiplayer aircraft.
