Just bought a Q2, and while I like the onboard demo programs, I really want to get started with VR in MSFS. I am using the Steam MSFS version and my system specs are below. My system runs MSFS just fine for me (all GA/VFR). My specs are:
The various forums and YouTube vids talk about OpenXR, SteamVR, Virtual Desk, regedits, etc., and I realized I don’t know exactly which of these I need to use. What I’ve tried to do so far:
I went into regedit (because forums said to) and couldn’t see that the correct Key included OpenXR, so thinking I didn’t have it I downloaded it, rebooted, but it didn’t show up, so I stopped messing with that. (I know when to stop and get help.)
I installed the Oculus app and got all signed up.
Then I set up my SteamVR (but am not sure where it might fit in with VR in MSFS).
Folks say Virtual Desk is an option, but I’m leaving that alone for now.
Got my cable link hooked up OK, so at least I’m charging the battery.
No joy yet, but not totally surprised. I’m 72 and not a real techie, but I don’t mind taking the time to go through the proper steps. I’m just not sure what apps/programs/files I need to use.
I hope someone can help clear me up on what needs to be done with which apps. Thanks so much!!
it kind of works for me - but i had to reduce the settings a bit.
So in my oculus desktop app, I use 70hz and max rendering resolution.
For the oculus tray tool, i set the default ASW mode as 45Hz forced.
in MSFS, i use the render resolution to 70.
else all the other settings as per the video.
I spent so much time tweaking the system to have a smooth experience, i don’t want stuttering nor black frames. It kinda works for me, but i would have liked it to be smoother, sharper. But this is MSFS, they don’t make it easy.
With the new oculus firmware you can setup AIRLINK which is in the beta section on the oculus PC app it works better than regular cable link. But even cable link is better in the new updates.
This won’t need you to stuff around with regedit just to get it working. You need to have at least 5g wifi and be fairly close to the router. So the easiest way just to get it going… you can tweak settings later would be. Just make sure you are in the beta for the PC APP.
Update oculus app and make sure the oculus headset is on at least v28
Connect to a 5g wifi with the quest (needs to be fairly close to the router)
Go to beta in the oculus app on the pc. Turn on airlink.
In the quest find airlink and launch it and it should go to oculus home (the grey grid thing).
Once airlink is established load MSFS and get into a flight and then when you hit ctrl and tab it should load into VR.
You can still have the cable in to charge if you like.
You don’t need Regedit or a 14 minute video with a YouTuber yelling… You only have to do most of this once.
Install the Oculus Desktop Software (this will set up the runtime nonsense)
Connect the headset to your computer using the cable (if you don’t have one then get one)
Turn on the headset
Open the Oculus Desktop Software and go Devices > Quest 2 and Touch > Graphics Preferences
Set “Refresh Rate” to 72Hz and the “Rendering Resolution” to 5408x2736
Click OK, Headset will Restart
Oculus Desktop Software click Settings > Beta > Turn on Public Test Channel
Oculus Desktop will install an update and some utility software.
Turn off Headset
Open file explore and go to C:Program Files/Oculus/Support/Oculus-Diagnostics/OculusDebugTool
(you can right click on choose “pin to start” or “pin to taskbar” to make it easier to find the next time)
Right click on OculusDebugTool and select “run as administrator”
Change Pixels Per Display Pixel Override to “1.2” - FOV Tangent Multiplier to 0.8;0.8 - Adaptive GPU Performance Scale “off” - Asynchronous Space Warp to “Force 45fps - AWS Enabled”.
Start Oculus Desktop Software.
Turn on Headset, put it on and enable Oculus Link then take it off and leave it turned on.
Start MSFS and when it loads press CTRL-TAB to enter VR mode and put the headset on.
In the game set your VR graphics settings on the main slider to 60 (down from 100) and make sure you are changing the VR setting not the 2d settings.
Normal start procedure is 1. Start Debug Tool by Running as Administrator then enter the settings as above. 2. Start Oculus Desktop Software and then turn on headset and start Oculus Link 3. Start MSFS.
Those settings work for me with a powerful system, you adjust the graphics in the game to suit but start off with everything on High and work from there to get it smooth. The biggest performance hit come from Pixels Per Display Pixel Override in the Debug Tool. Make the numbers bigger (like 1.7) for more sharpness and smaller for smooth play (like 1.2). Change FOV Tangent Multiplier to lower numbers (like 0.7;0.7) for more performance but it will effect your field of view in the headset. In the game the biggest impact to performance is the render setting, turning it up from 60 will give more detail but hit performance.
It shouldn’t be this complicated but this is where we are right now. After initial setup it’s a lot easier. Just ignore SteamVR, it serves no purpose for the Quest 2.
Actually I find I don’t need these steps as it works with no discernible difference. I also have render scaling set to 100 as I only fly GA. Maybe different for airliners etc.
