In one of the MSFS Twitch streams there was a question about wave lift.
It was on the development list, but was cut for Simupdate 11 because it would take more time to implement and they would only consider an implementation if there is enough attention for it
(or votes like in this thread, created for that reason).
While they definitely have to sort out the basic Thermals, Up & Down Drafts and make them more realistic (because one depends on the other), wave lift should be on the list too.
Wave lift gets created in special cases and has different indicators,
here is a very good summary of how can I see wave lift?
While gliders make the most use of it, itâs not just glider related, every aircraft gets effected by the airflow so this topic should be on the realism development list.
Weather is weather. We donât glide in a parallel universe. Standing Lee waves are used by glider pilots and commercial pilots alike.
In the first iteration, it need be no more than a couple of sliders to set height and Frequency of oscillation, but for live weather, both Skysight.org and Meteoblue off wave prediction data.
question, is it possible for you guys to play the youtube video in the OP ?
for some strange reason it doesnât start for me, only works with the smartphone
I somehow doubt that they can actually model wavelift in the sim, as long as we donât see any nearly realistic basic thermals in the sim we are probably very far away from wave lift getting implemented.
In the glider Q&A it was stated that wave is an âedgeâ phenomenon - it isnât. Whilst the kind of waves the Perlan ll hunt for might be edge weather, there is actually weak wave (10-20,000 ft somewhere in the UK most weeks during winter - and sites like Aboyne in Scotland rely on the regular existence of wave for their business model to work. It is a well known expedition site with a degree of predictability.
Photos outside my window today. Post yours
Iâm guessing it will be waving somewhere in the world every day
itâs astonishing what can be achieved with wave lift 76.000 feet⊠I mean look at this, we need this thermal feature in the sim (and the Perlan 2 as well )
The Perlan 2 would be a great ââlocal legendââ candidate and in case Asobo decides to implement wave lift there could be a tutorial/ mission to recreate this record breaking flight.
The way Marten mentions ââargentinaââ in the OP interview sounds like they thought about this idea
Please bring mountain waves/wave soaring to MSFS 2024. Rotor, rotor clouds, lenticulars, everything. If the sky really is not the limit, then wave lift is a must.
Dear Asobo, please give us glider pilots some love in FS2024. You have the most beautiful simulation Iâve ever had the pleasure of using but gliders canât be used properly without some changes. Please rework cloud formations and thermals, add mountain waves and rotors etc. (look at Condor 3, it does it very well, with the man power you have, youâd sort that out in a few sprints)
So much focus is added on avionics and large jet liners but little love is added to the basics of flying.
In my real life flying experience itâs been very important to understand the dynamics of mountain wave so that I can avoid potentially violent turbulence in a light single engine plane.
In the sim it seems that only the initial windward side lift and lee side sink is simulated and the subsequent waves of lift and sink do not seem to be. It also appears that the rotors that would churn beneath the wave are also absent.
It would be great if a flight up Owens Valley in California (the OG bush flight from FS2020) would actually have the potential of throwing pilots in the washing machine if they do not respect the mountain wave. It would also affect all those airline sim pilots who I think never get a realistic idea of how turbulent it can get downwind of the Sierras or the Colorado Rockies.
Of course this would also be great for glider pilots trying to climb down wind from a range, as IRL this can be possible hundreds of miles downwind from a prominent range. I donât think itâs possible in the sim.
Personally, I think this shouldâve been a mechanic from the get-go of FS2024. Iâm really sure it isnât hard to implement.
Note that many of us would even be fine with a basic version of it - so long as we can actually use the Alps to reach FL140, and actually be fearful when flying into Queenstown.
This, and Cumulus development over thermals (âflying cloud streetâ) would be what we need.
