Weather stuck in the past

And there you have it .. Real, fake, or random.. whatever — at least the Visual Representation in the sim should match the Atis coming from the sim.

Very often it DOES NOT – so it is “Broken” – even within the sim itself.

Remember somewhen in October they said they found an issue with live weather where some server was caching METARs resulting in old data being rendered in the sim?

This right now sounds exactly like that kind of issue. It might be the METARs again (which might be a reason not all areas are affected), maybe the meteoblue data. Remember that MSFS merges the METAR with the data from meteoblue since the former don’t provide data for higher altitude clouds but better match the conditions at the airport.

And how long @mdapol might want to discuss what they think live weather should be, it IS a bug if the weather doesn’t change at certain locations.

Also watch their talk about weather in the Q&A where they said the METAR caching issue was a reason for wrong weather in the US while most of the rest of the world was fine (similar to the issue now I guess):

They literally use current METARs to render parts of the live weather, how could anyone say it should not be a representation of the real weather conditions?

The current issue is that the MeteoBlue forecast model being injected into the sim appears to be from several days previous. The airport surface METAR for wind, temperature and pressure comes from a different server than the MeteoBlue forecast model, and those values are correct for the current date and time for a given airport.

I have not fired up the sim yet today to see if the obsolete model data issue still exists, but it was a definite problem all day Sunday and Saturday.

I remember this happening awhile ago. I wonder if they have some way of automatically detecting this issue instead of relying only on user reports.

Hello everyone,

There was indeed an issue which resulted in having a delay with the current meteo.
This should be fixed now!

Thank you for your feedback.

I will wait for your replies before closing this thread.

Hey, I stand corrected. @SkipTalbot and @aracines provided the information I asked for to convice me that Live Weather should be (at least mostly) the same as IRL weather. I had bad information. I dream of the day when the METAR I get before landing actually matches the weather when I get to my destination.

I checked a couple locations that did not match meteoblue this weekend, and they now seem corrected, at least for me. Thanks!

An addition to the Weather settings UI of a last updated timestamp or the date, initialization time, and valid forecast hour of the Meteoblue NEMS model would probably help users identify issues quickly and avoid a vast amount of confusion.

Problem is sorted now. Thank you

Just loaded into the sim, and the position of storm systems, fronts and jet streams over North America now corresponds almost perfectly with the current satellite photo, so it appears the problem is indeed fixed. Thank you!

I’m having a similar issue as it relates to the OP. 3 days ago I flew into KATL…heavy rain showers were depicted and that was accurate…down to the baro reading. However, since that flight every time I switch on LIVE WEATHER I get heavy rain showers. I always start my flights with CLEAR SKIES as that seemed to correct the inaccurate live weather. Not anymore, everytime I go to LIVE weather I get the heavy rain regardless of where I start the flight.

You are still having that issue today? It seems to have been fixed for everyone

As of yesterday, yes.

The issue was fixed early this morning.

At least if you spawn at KDFW right now and get heavy thunderstorms, it would be accurate to current conditions. The storms yesterday at KDFW were certainly not correct since the r/w conditions (then) were high clouds and mostly sunny.

The problem does appear to have been resolved.

I don’t have an update available. Was it fixed without an update?

This was entirely a problem with the Live Weather servers at Microsoft’s end - nothing that would have required an update to the MSFS installation itself.

I just checked. I’m not getting the heavy rain now but the weather is not accurate with exception of the barometer. I started in KAMA Amarillo, Tx where there is heavy precipitation… I got broken overcast, no precipitation. I went to a couple of other airports in that general area with same result. I then started at my home airport KTEB and the weather appeared to be accurate.

Rain is not going to be perfect, especially in a place like Texas where rain travels in fast small cells. The weather in MSFS is only a representation of actual conditions, kind of a mix of current forecast and METAR results sort of. We don’t know the exact algorithm. So, a steady rain that’s sitting there for a few hours or days might be correct, but, passing cells will only be approximated.

The metar indicated rain. I would expect the weather engine is accessing metar data with no regard to Texas weather peculiarities.
