Weird thing I discovered

I discovered a weird thing and wondered whether anybody else has seen this or even knows how to fix this permanently.

OK on SU10, and Windows 22H2, with an RTX3080. Now this happened before the 22H2 update but I can’t say whether this happened under SU9 or not.

I basically set everything to ultra and when I go to my test airfield, RAF Northolt (EGWU) I would get around 11-13 fps on the runway from an outside view.
A lot of this I would contribute to the closeness of Heathrow and London, when on rwy 07.

Now after SU10 and nvidia 517.48 driver this has gone up to 16-18 fps.
Now before you stop reading thinking that this is a complaining note - it is not.

What i found , by accident, is that once on the runway I hit escape and go back into the General Options. I have DLSS Performance currently selected. I alter this to TAA and save the options.
Without leaving the screen I alter the option back to DLSS and save again.

Now I go back to Northolt, but instead of pressing ‘Resume’ I press ‘Restart’. Once I am back on the runway I get 36-40fps!

How weird is that. It is reproducible every time. It is almost like the DLSS setting does not properly activate the correct

So firstly, was anybody aware of this phenomenon? What causes it? Can i do anything to get the better fps without having to go through that rigmarole.
Can anybody else reproduce this?

Also whilst it is a pain to do, I hope that it does help anybody else that suffers from low fps.

Before I created this I did one last test. B350i on rwy 25. 10 fps. The double change and save and restart and 26-27 fps.
I also went back and changed it to TAA and restarted and got 24-26 fps.

It seems that the UserCfg.opt setting for Anti-Aliasing is not being initialized properly.

Any thoughts, comments and ideas are welcome.

Did that happen with the studio driver aswell? Or have you not tried that? I think there’s some funny business going on with that new game ready driver for sure…

Yes indeed. I discovered last week after the SU10 upgrade.
Whilst the new driver increased the fps, to be fair, I can’t place the cause on the new driver as the symptoms were the same under 516.94.
As I newly discovered this, I can’t say how far back this method would work. All I can say is that I never got close to 30 fps on the runway at Northolt.

Moved to #self-service:install-performance-graphics

I gave that a try but it didn’t work for me. I didn’t see any difference in fps.

Sorry that you didn’t see any benefit. Can i ask what OS and card you are using? A friend of mine didn’t see any either but he is on W10 and a GTX1080i.
If nobody has come across this before we need identify what combination allows this to take place and therefore allow a permanent fix to be identified by Asobo.

My specs are: Windows 11( the version shows as Insider Preview 10.0.22622.290), evga 3080ti, I9 10900k, 32gigs, ssd drives. Gforce experience turned off. Latest game driver. Also tried the studio driver.

The phenomenon of better performance after a restart has been around a long time, way before DLSS. I’ve experienced it in the past without having to do anything in the settings.

The most obvious explanation would be that it’s somewhow benefitting from cached data.

That sounds in the same ball park as myself. Did you try it at EGWU? If not which airfield did you use?

I can understand that but the fact that it is not persistent, i.e. doesn’t survive a program restart, would suggest that tf it is the case that there would be some benefit here that is being missed.

KATL in Atlanta Georgia.

OK as we had similar setups I tried this at KATL.
On start I got 10-11 fps from behind on the rwy. I went in the General Options.and didn’t try altering them but came out and hit ‘Restart’.

From the same view position I immediately got 30-31 fps.

So it would seem that the experience is not limited to one airfield, but along with the question of why I am getting a reduced fps another question is added as to why somebody else does not get the benefit.

Am I the only one benefiting from this? What do other people get at either EGWU or KATL if they do not get any boost?
As each system is different I would lean towards people with W11 22H2 and an RTX card as sample set.

It seems you are getting abnormally low fps when you first load up for some reason, and when you restart it’s back to normal. My fps at KATL is around 25 and I’m running 3 monitors at 2k. That is with most of the settings at high with a lod value of 100. I was hoping for a few more fps with dlss so I could bump up some of those settings, but I basically have the same fps no matter which antialiasing option I choose. Sounds like my fps is normal on first load up, so restarting does nothing on my system. I’m already sitting at normal the first time loading up.

That doesn’t seem too dissimilar to what I would expect when comparing to mine.
So it would seem that for some reason I get penalized on startup. God knows why.

The only thing that I can think of is that when I installed MSFS I had a GTX790. Maybe deep in the bowels of the game there is a setting that still thinks I have that card and uses that when loading at first.
It sounds wacky but it does fit. I just would rather not completely clear everything out of my system and reinstall again - unless I have something tangible to say that doing that will fix my issue.

OK Gents,
I have failed to find anybody so far that can answer the question of what is causing this issue, so far.

From what BRANDYDOG01 has said, and I have no reason to doubt this, it would seem that the problem is likely with my setup.
So thew question now is what is causing this and how do I fix it?

Anybody got any ideas, or even better - answers.

sounds like a restart is needed for the dlss to take effect

Thanks for responding. It sounds like a good very basic check but unfortunately I have restarted on numerous occasions since SU10 and DLSS came in.
Again, maybe a salient point is that the initial frame rates that I am getting match what I was getting before the SU10 update. Therefore I don’t think that SU10 is the cause. i think I just discovered a bug/anomaly.

I need to find out what is causing the reduced fps in the first place and why when I restart after visiting the settings menu the increase does not stick.

More info that may help somebody point me to a solution.

I tried a fairly obvious solution of rebuilding the UserCfg.opt file by simply renaming it and allowing a new one to be created on a restart. problem still exists.

If you restart the flight without going into settings, does your performance increase as well?

A very good question, especially as I had got locked into the procedure that I used when I originally found this issue.
So I just checked. Loaded up at EGUW, 12fps. Escaped out and then clicked on ‘Restart’ without doing anything else and got 27 fps.

So you are correct that the settings menu, and presumably the settings, are NOT the cause. So does this help anybody with further suggestions?

I do admit that so far I seem to be the only one with this issue, at least on these forums, and that i find strange.
