Made use of the winter scenery and continued my trip in @GotGravel’s Savage Carbon, going in-land to Iceland, with a trip from Hornafjörour (BIHN) to Siglufjörour (BISI).
Weather was cold, and I stayed up at 6000 ft above the clouds. Going into the clouds would freeze me up instantly. At 6000 ft, it was around -15 °C. On ground, it was about -5 °C.
I got to see some terrain if it peeked through the clouds, which I used to navigate a little (map, time and heading). I hadn’t prepared very well with my timing, so I pretty much just flew my course until I encountered sea. But the clouds were getting denser. Luckily a break in the cloud showed me the coast. I dove through a hole as quickly as I could, then figured out where I was on the map, and luckily had my airport not far away.
Landing on the airport, the Savage almost instantly turned into an ice-popcicle, but I managed to “taxi” off the runway.

Off we go, climbing quickly now that we have some clear sky … want to stay above the clouds …
Sure. I haven’t messed with the new Extremity Dead Zone, or Reactivity settings that came with the latest update.
As the centre point of the Thrustmaster T-Pedals is kinda vague and hard to feel, even wearing just socks, I have the dead zone set to 8% and -68% for sensitivity. This gives a flatter curve near the centre, where you don’t want too much rudder deflection for coordinated turns, and lining up on the strip for takeoff and tweaking your touchdown, but plenty more will come in for side-slipping if needed, with more rudder input.
Took the Savage Cub up for a post-update, mod-free test flight from Innsbruck LOWI to Bolzano LIPB via the Brenner Pass to see the snow. Jaw droppingly satisfying 47 minutes of flight time!
this is a pic I took while flying over London ( London City add-on from Flightsim.to). One can clearly see that my old RX580 is struggling to render everything. Truth be told however, when I fly over at 100+ knots I never notice that. It does not hamper my immersion. Only if I look at pics afterwards and scrutinize them do the flaws appear. So I am quite happy the way things work at the moment.
I’m currently doing a ferry flight in the C172 from Texas to Germany, and I’ve been basically stuck in Labrador trying to make progress to Greenland, but short days, crazy weather, missing airports, and ice have grounded me many times. My CFI gave me a technique for a rapid descent (60’ bank in a circle to lose altitude quickly without gaining too much speed) that I used to punch through holes in the clouds, but the ice in this sim is a killer…!
Using Meteoblue and Windy website I’ve finally been able to find a country where I can fly at as high as 12000 feet but not get iced up all over in this time of the year.
My real life CFI taught me in Dallas and he always wanted to ferry his C172 to Germany where he is now. During our training we talked about ferrying the plane, but eventually he just had it shipped over. I’m doing the flight as a homage to the idea.
So the topic what did i do today in MSFS and the answer it CRASHING ever since the new update my sim crashes in all my flights after i am in the air. Its always after clicking something. Not always the same thing. Thank you Microsoft for messing up my time off for Christmas and was looking forward to doing a lot of flying. Same as the thanksgiving update that broke things. Merry Christmas
My state capital, Sacramento, looks terrible. This version of London looks great compared to the default. Oh, yeah, LA has many monoliths along the streets where our famous palm trees should be. It’s getting better and is much progress at the end of my 25 years. Cheers, and Happy Christmas in advance.
I noticed two huge cone mounds in northern and central California… This one near Beale AFB on the way to Sacramento… the other one, near Fresno (but I did not take a shot).
The update has improved on my end. I5 9600k 2070 super flying around the Eifel tower looks amazing in vr. The reflections of the tower and buildings in the water just looks too cool. Shadows on buildings. That area is some amazing scenery, with cool looking buildings. LFPO. Merry xmas to all.
Youtube has many Bond movies for free, so I watched You Only Lived Twice and remembered the Shinmoedake volcano area. Thought I’d go see how it fared in MSFS 2020. Not bad, but a bit subdued topography and overgrown with flora. Still, a gorgeous area to fly in - probably better when not overcast.
