OTHH - OMDB (MSFS 2020)
Lovely sunrise on departure and a packed OMDB on arrival!

Power Out Off-Airport Emergency Landings Practice this morning.
Using trim to set best glide is huge win in this scenario as it allows me to go heads down to work on the restart checklist and then mess with the radio to declare the emergency.
I didn’t quite hit best glide airspeed of 65 in this example.
But I had already picked the rural road as my target, so was assured of making it.
Sadly, some of these are better than my regular landings.

Continued my wanderings across Pennsylvania in the Zlin Savage Cub. For these flights, I have no flightplan - I just fly wherever piques my interest. Yesterday, I ended up at Cherry Springs (5G6), as small grass airstrip by the state park of the same name.
Heading out, I wandered in a vague north-westerly direction, and found myself over the Allegheny Reservoir just north of the Allegheny National Recreation Area, and crossing into New York State:
From there, another lake caught my eye - Chautauqua (try saying say that quickly 3 times in a row!). Here we are at its’ southern end at Jamestown:
Passing over its’ northern end, I headed for Lake Erie, visible in the distance, and decided to land at Camp Vernon (0D4), another grass airstrip right by the shore. I think it’s that green spot in the gap between the trees, straight ahead:
Yup! - dead ahead:
Admiring the fall colors:
From here, I had a choice - turn soutwest to Cleveland, or turn northeast to Buffalo. I chose the latter. Following the shore, I passed by Dunkirk (I did not know there was a Dunkirk, NY):
and Buffalo:
I then turned east and followed the Niagara River, Past the falls (which are not well represented, so no pics except this one):
The sun was about to set, so I decided to land. Shear (63NY) was close by:
So that’s where I ended up today.
Tomorrow - well, who knows where I’ll end up - I sure don’t ![]()

I flew over rivers. Many rivers. One river at a time. But many times one river. Sometimes many rivers. Most times just rivers
Gertrude Stein
Oh yes, exactly so. “.. because being so high makes you feel high but being high as high as you can be does not make you feel high.”
Those were her comments about flying over mountains and not understanding the dynamics of flight. Great spot

Fokker D.Vll
This was one of the most dangerous WW1 fighter aircraft. It was the only aircraft named in the Treaty of Versailles at the end of the war, which required all of them to be surrendered to the allies…..so someone thought very highly of it.
Took it for a ‘test drive’ today.
Beautiful looking aircraft, inside and out.
Simple but very nice cold and dark start.
Flight model works for me, pulls left a little with torque, and wishes to climb all the time. It is an aircraft that you have to ‘fly.’ You can’t take your hand off the stick, you need control of pretty much every second of flight. Great in low level flying, skimming the tree tops.
It has no flaps, no trim and no brakes.
My only tiny complaint is no torque on take off…but for the £9 or whatever I paid in a sale….
Captain Sim have brought us some very very good WW1 aircraft. Hats off to Captain Sim for this, otherwise we wouldn’t have one.
Time to climb aboard the Turbine Duke for the final time, feeling a little sad, I will miss the venerable old girl.
Destination was Port Stanley but has changed. Officially, the NOTAMS stated that the Stanley Runway is closed for repairs and all traffic is to divert to RAF Mount Pleasant.
Unofficially, the change is due to aquiring the excellent RAF Mt Pleasant Addon scenery by Flak from flightsim.to. If you intend to fly to the Falklands, this addon is well worth the price of a coffee.
On the ramp at Comodo and our very last flight together.
Goodbye Argentina, next stop the Falklands. Circling Comodo to get on track. 522 miles to run.
After an uneventful couple of hours, we start our descent to Stanley.
Of course, I could not just fly all the way to the Falklands without at least a touch and go on the Port Stanley runway. My is that one a bumpy one, the bumpiest I have encountered since I got my platform. If you want to get your teeth rattled, give Stanley a go.
Touch and go over, we set sail for Mt Pleasant and start lining up for the approach in extreme turbulence and a fierce crosswind.
And down safely, albeit the wind was trying to pick up the port wing and weathercock the aircraft until almost at a standstill. Braking was done with right brake predominately just to try keep her straight on the runway.
Taxying in, if I cut the power to idle, the wind would blow me backwards. Very hard to taxi in, requiring large bursts of power to get moving and quickly taking it out again.
Taxying in for the final time. Credit goes to Flak for the excellent airport scenery. Buy the guy a coffee in confidence.
Aaaaand we are done. EGNM Leeds Bradford Airport to EGYP Mt Pleasant. Both with UK ICAO codes, but on opposite sides of the planet.
Started mid July and ended end of October. Its been quite the ride.
Next is the return journey in the A2A Aerostar.
Hey, it’s those YouTube blokes at ‘eafrow’
Continuing my wanderings around the northeastern USA. Yesterday, I finished at Shear (63NY), so that’s where I started today, in a modded XCub.
After take-off, I headed east along the shore of Lake Ontario, past Rochester:
and joined the Oneida River at Phoenix:
Following the river took me to the western end of Oneida Lake at Brewerton:
At the eastern end of the lake is the small grass airstrip of Oneida Lake (8NY7), right by Verona Beach State Park. It’s a short walk to the lake edge:
Back in the air, we follow the Erie Canal for a while (this is near Oriskany):
Keeping either the canal and or I-90 in view all the way to Gloversville:
which is at the southwestern end of the Great Sacandaga Lake. On the far shore of the lake, at the northeastern end, is the Plateau Sky Ranch airstrip (1F2), which appears to be an undiscovered glider field (at least, it’s not mentioned in any of my MSFS databases):
This is one of the delights of flying to unfamiliar places in MSFS - one never knows what one will find ![]()
As you can see, the sun was setting, so time to call it a day. More adventure awaits tomorrow! ![]()
