What does PCVR stand for?

Hi,

Lately I have come across the abbreviation PCVR in this forum.

Presumably it has something to do with virtual reality. If it has to do with VR on a Personal Computer, is there also a LaptopVR?
I have googled PCVR, but the explanations for PCVR seem to be completely different.

Can someone, like the folks who use this term, please explain?
Thank you!

It just means VR hooked to a PC (or Laptop).

Lately with all the “standalone” headsets like Oculus Quest, Pico Neo or Pimax Crystal, it’s become important to distinguish:

  • PCVR, ie the apps running on your PC and connecting to your VR headset (eg: DisplayPort+USB, Link cable, Virtual Desktop). MSFS is PCVR.

  • Standalone, ie the (often Android) apps running directly on the VR headset, without need for any PC. For example you can run Beat Saber directly on your Quest 2 without a PC.

Actually when talking about Beat Saber it’s a good example of showing the importance to mention PCVR or not, since there are 2 versions of Bear Saber: the one you can run from your PC, or the one you can run directly on your headset.

Not to be confused with PSVR, which is Sony’s PlayStation VR headset / games and requires a PS4 or PS5.

Great point, and I would technically qualify PSVR as PCVR (since the content runs on a separate machine, the PlayStation is assimilated to a PC)!

Hi @mbucchia,

Thank you very much for your detailed explanation!

And many more thanks for all the work you do for us VR players!!!
