I totally remember the box it was in when I upgraded, it was a “Lightning” modem
Of course, that was around the same time I upgraded to a CGA screen on my Leading Edge XT with a scientific coprocessor and as much memory as I could put in it (720KB I think it was?).
Your not a real simmer unless your remember AirWariors on the Genie network .. before Al Gore invented the internet…$2.00 / hr to play, except when they were have a historical recreations … ah those were the days ..
Serious…I guess it all depends on your level of sanity…or should I say in my case…insanity!
I look at it this way… $250 plus an hour wet… or put that $ in the closet.
The difference between a “casual” and a “serious” simmer is really more like a spectrum. While it can be understood as a black and white concept, i don’t think anyone is really all of one or the other. You can have someone that spends $15000 on a simpit but all they do is troll people in a 152. You have people that “take it seriously” where they go on vatsim and use all the right radio stuffs and go full send cold & dark start and sit there for the entirety of the flight and if the game faults in any way than the experience is completely ruined and in turn go onto the forums to make a big deal out of their experience. Then you got people who pick a random plane and departure airport every time they play and just see “what happens,” and the concept of “VFR” and “IFR” and totally foreign concepts and theres no interest in learning; they just want to get up and go flyin.
There’s a lot of in-between with all of those examples. The bottom line i think is whether or not you’re having fun. If you’re not having fun going full send on the ATP experience because the game is not up to snuff, try playing a bit less serious. That’s what great about Flight Simulator, it’s really a sandbox if you think about it. There’s no “correct” way to play.
Those Garmin G5s are absolute units! I think the real ones are like half that size or smaller! But very nice setup, you’re definitely a serious simmer if you’ve got all that.
Well, I for one welcome you. So, welcome, sir! It looks to me you’ve been hanging out with the wrong ppl. To say it with the words of the late great Kris Kristofferson, Don’t let the ■■■■■■■■ get you down. Enjoy your flying and ignore the overly dense and all will be fine.
I don’t overly care about people who take flight simming very, very seriously. Good on them, in fact. If I had the time/resources, I’d love to 3d print my flight deck and spend thousands on a high end PC and peripherals. I can’t, which is why the Xbox, HOTAS one, and Navigraph on a tablet is perfect for me. What I object to is the elitism and snobbery around it. Thankfully, the majority of PC users on here seem to be of similar mind i.e. not really bothered about labelling people and sneering because VATSIM et al isn’t used.
Everything I’m not … sometimes I follow all the procedures, other times I just hit fly. I do this for fun not for some pipedream that one day I’ll be sat in an A320 and the whole of the flight crew will get bad food poisoning.
After following this thread the question came up, Who has been given the authority to name someone a SERIOUS or NOT SERIOUS SIMMER. In my world anybody who takes the time to start up the Sim or Game ( what ever you want to call it ) be it in a full home cockpit or just a mouse and joystick a SIMMER and nothing more
serious simmer or not, who cares actually? The only description i see of simmer is when heating water just below the boiling point.
Simulator is described like this.
a machine designed to provide a realistic imitation of the controls and operation of a vehicle, aircraft, or other complex system, used for training purposes.
I think we are searious when we using the sim for training purposes or experimentation.
sorry i gotta stick my 2 cents in.. In my opinion none of us are pilots until we have a real FAA ticket by leaning to fly in a real airplane. there are only two types of users. Simmers and gamers. Simmers build their own cockpit in their mancave and simulate flying a real airplane. Gamers play the game on xbox in their living room. Yes, we all started out as gamers.
I know lots of kids that flew with us using a 3d pro and now fly the real deal. Flightsims have been around for many years. All they do is open our minds to the possibilities. When we do complete navigation flights with charts and ATC in the sim we really feel inside that we can do it.
That opens the door to do something amazing. Go to the airport and meet your CFI then take that first introductory flight. You will never forget that feeling when the CFI tells you to grab the yoke and do a 180. Just me personal thoughts..
