OpenXR Toolkit does nothing for FS2024 at least for me with TAA. I got the same frametimes with OXR on and after disabling/deleting it as some suggestet. This is one more indication of something really wrong with graphic settings in VR. I could see the FFR with OXR enabled, but it did not make FPS any better.
sadly to me the same as FS2020 with DX12. low fps / i511600K / RTX3070 / 32gb ram
Msfs 2020 dx11 - 737 ifly max - payware scenery - 40 fps in VR
msfs 2024 dx 12 - c172 default - scenery default - 12 fps in VR
now we don’t have the option to choose dx11 or dx12
Did hope for improvements over 2020 but it got worse for me.
- Quest 3
- AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
- 32GB DDR5 6000MHz
- RTX 4080
- NVMe
I’ve tried with both Quest Link and Virtual Desktop using OpenXR Toolkit and to get flyable FPS I have to lower the visuals a lot, removing the fun completely. Also experienced some CTDs but mostly it has been VD that has been crashing.
I thought that my specs would make it possible to run MSFS in VR, but that’s not the case (neither 2020 nor 2024). IL-2 and DCS works fine with acceptable visuals and FPS.
Specifications:
i9-12900K / RTX 3090 ti / 64GB RAM
Without VR everything runs like normal with 75 frames on Ultra and looks great.
In VR with Q3 and link cable the frames drop to around 26-30 in TAA.
With DLSS there is about 36 fps but then everything is so blurry that it looks like s…hit…
For me, VR works significantly better in 2020 (smoother and sharper)
What do you guys and gals think about the new UI?
Like the fact that now we need 4 clicks to get into VR Settings, instead of the 3 we needed in 2020.
“It’s just one more click, duuuuude!”, yes. Now multiply that one extra click for aaaaaall the times we’re gonna have to access VR settings, and you’ll see the bill your Shrink is gonna send you.
I wish Apple was doing the UI for them (stop the hate before you start, boy)
Cheers!
Will repurchase when both the sim and my budget for new hardware improves.
2020’s always been super smooth with 35-45fps in the big payware jets/airports on a 3070 (although I manually halve or quarter add-on/livery textures to minimise VRAM). Stutters in 2020 were often caused by freeware, so while the vanilla 2024 ran smoothly, it was at 20-25fps in default aircraft/small airfields. The crashes and unreliable mouse hotspots were the clincher.
The UI in general is poor. It wasn’t great in 2020 either in my opinion. The menu doesn’t need to be an 3d model of the earth as that’s just a waste of pc resources.
Its all clearly aimed at xbox users first, anyone else second. The layout of the options menu is poor as well, why are vr graphics settings not in the graphics settings tab…
In general 2024 has some potential, but it feels like (even excluding the server issues) that it is half baked and untested. Aircraft none functioning, performance all over the place.
The vr experience is okay, but I went into 2020 afterwards and it was much more polished and functional. Which you would expect from 2024 as well, especially considering the cost.
I did my first VR flight today (early morning in Germany, low load on servers) and it was a very good experience! The sim was silky smooth in VR, absolutely no stutters, neither micro stutters nor the second long freezes that are typical in FS2020.
And the visuals! OMG!!! Very, very beautiful and realistic.
FS2024 will become an incredible sim over time, of that I’m sure…
The infamous shutdown issue at least appears to have been resolved, but I have now lost sound, after taking my Quest 3 off (via VD btw) for a few seconds. Must be something to do with the virtual desktop sound device “disappearing” when the headset goes into standby, but that should come back, at the very least, by changing the device specifically to the virtual desktop device again, when in VR mode?
Anyone found a solution to this or is it just me?
Oh and the “clickability” of controls, at least on the C172 G1000, gets lost after going to the ESC menu and can only apparently be fixed by leaving and re-entering VR mode. Unless of course, you know different.
VR performance also good for me with a mid range PC with a 3070 graphics card. and Pico 4. VR headset running virtual desktop. I’d say its both clearer and smoother than FS2020 - so I’m very happy!
Definitely worse than FS2020, even on low settings. DLSS helps a little bit, but still not as good as 2020. Big disappointment
I only fly in VR, high end system I9-13900 / 32GB / RTX4090.
I have set my settings like in MSFS2020.
My VR experience is not very good, in MSFS2020 I have fully fluid experience, not in MSFS2024, FR not okay while the image is sometimes jumping from left to right (never have that in MSFS2020).
Really disappointing !
I guess that only time will tell as to whether this apparently poorer performance is related to the still ongoing server issues or not.
My Q3 appears to be maintaining its target framerate, but I’m only flying the C172 and haven’t really spent any time on the quality of the scenery yet.
kinda… you have to map everything and peculiarly you have to be in VR mode in the main menu to even see your controllers… then you have to map everything… you have to map in i think it is the VR section the select function so that you can actually navigate around in the menus (at least i did… )
biggest problem i have had so far is the cockpit interactions section, the cockpit interaction increase and decrease don’t allow you to set an inverted axis as we could in 2020 so that’s making it problematic to get some mappings that work as well as they did in 2020… i have decrease set to veritcal thumbstick and increase set to horizontal which seems to give a work around, but it’s really not great
i had an okay experience apart from the binds not being quite right to have the same easy interaction as before… first time i’ve actually got to fly in the new sim… is definitely an improvement i think from fluidity perspective… definitely like the way you can do more in VR like menus and stuff… i’ll get the hang of how to orgnaise all the controls in time and a bit of effort now will mean you can just jump in and go rather than thinking about how you need to change the control sets for each plane…
After a night of messing around with settings, I’m very happy with what I’ve got so far. Performance in terms of FPS is basically the same as 2020, but definitely a smoother experience. No stutters, not hitching, no random second long freezes, etc… I can even exit and re-enter VR now without a performance degradation. Overall I’m very happy so far.
Reverb G2, 5800x3d, RTX 3080, 32 GB Ram. Running mostly Medium settings with DLSS performance in sim, using the OpenXR Toolkit to adjust resolution to 2900x2900 or so. Usually right around 40 fps, often being locked to the magic 45.
It’s strange that a lot of people with higher end systems (4080’s & 4090’s) seem to be the ones getting worse much performance than they were in 2020.
I think I read somewhere that the OXR toolkit only works with DX11 and not DX12… can anyone confirm?
Note that I’m not saying you cant bring up the menu in DX12 and configure things - some of which will work, however, most of the performance settings I think don’t really do anything?
Everything I’ve tried so far seems to be working as expected. Still very useful imo.
I’ve been having major sound issues. If I try to change the audio source while the sim is active it’s hit or miss if sound will recover. 2020 had the same issue but it’s much worse in 2024.
Sometimes when launching the sim I’ll get choppy audio until the main menu loads.
I try to make sure whatever audio device I want to use is active before launching.
Is there an option to prevent standby mode when you take the headset off?
3 Days Not one completed flight. 500mbps, 4080 and 7950x3D to watch static images. A joke so far. A really bad joke.
Oh dear. That doesn’t sound good.
So let’s hope that it somehow has something to do with TAA and Pimax Crystal and that there will be a fix for it soon.
BTW: What is your VR headset?
